Fighting Doomsday – Superman’s Greatest Foe
Despite all of the mighty warriors, dictators, despots and super-powered, would-be conquerors that the superhero Superman has faced over the years, none challenged the stellar hero more than the Doomsday machines called – fittingly enough – Doomsday. 1993s The Death of Superman, in fact, was a tale of the mightiest terrestrial battle that ever took place, as Superman the Man of Steel went head-to-head with a creature as strong and durable as himself. It would be a battle that would chronicle the day-long fall of the mightiest superhero in all of comic-dom and solidify Doomsday as the final nightmare of any hero’s dream.
Where Did the Doomsday Machine Come From
Understanding Doomsday’s incredible power necessitates a dip into the titular monster’s history. Created from a spec of Kryptonian DNA from the long-gone planet’s brightest – if misguided – scientists, Doomsday’s introduction to the revelation called life was akin to a thunderstorm of magnificent proportions. He was the result of a scientific, and possibly military, experiment to create the perfect weapon.
The scientists created a template creature and sent it out into the harshest environment of an incredibly unfriendly plant (all this information and how it unfolds can be seen in the Superman Hunter/Prey comic book series at the link in the resource box). The early incarnations of Doomsday, even though they aere tailored to be tough and resilient, didn’t survive but for mere seconds at the hands of the powerful and hostile native denizens of the planet.
The Kryptonian scientists brought whatever speck of DNA matter they could back inside an indestructible dome they maintained in the center of the planet and reconstructed an even tougher incarnation of Doomsday; each time he was sent back out, it took longer for him to die and he returned ever stronger. Decades passed with this inhuman process of pain and rebuilding retained in the genetic memory of Doomsday. Unbeknownst to the scientists responsible for his creation, Doomsday was growing an almost feral hatred of everything alive – including them.
The Last Day of Reckoning
The Kryptonian scientists had grown very proud of their creation, because in the most recent trial, it had taken a full day for Doomsday to be killed. They felt that the time was approaching – perhaps in the very next trial – when the next incarnation would be the one that could finally kill the super-powered monsters of the alien planet. To their short-lived pleasure, the next Doomsday they sent out stayed away for a very long time. So long, in fact, they wondered why they no longer heard or saw the many monsters that had littered the planet.
They did not have long to wait; suddenly, a huge thud sounded against the outside of their ultra-hard dome, which had held fast against many attempts by the native folk to break it over the decades. They were confident it would hold, as it was rated to withstand missile strikes and other great blasts; unfortunately, they had done their work too well and the mighty Doomsday was now strong beyond all reason.
He broke through the dome with just another punch and killed everything inside. This was the creature that would one day face Superman the Man of Steel and defeat him – although Superman himself was so mighty, Doomsday would have to give up his own life in the endeavor.
