Mayi Chiponda Composing Songs to Boost President Joyce Banda’s Campaign
Margret Chiponda, former Director of Women in the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced that she is composing political songs to promote President Joyce Banda’s campaign for tripartite elections 2014.
Chiponda is the maker of many hit songs, Sendelani and Tiyende, which lit up late President Bingu wa Mutharika’s campaign for 2009 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The songs enjoyed massive airplay especially on the state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) radio and in some drinking joints.
Chiponda defected to People’s Party (PP) when it took power soon after Mutharika died in office and his DPP got out of power.
“I am the same Mayi Chiponda who composed Sendelani and Tiyende songs for DPP. I am old but not finished. I am working on some songs to step up your [President Banda] campaign for 2014 elections,” she said Monday at a rally at Njonja in Dedza where President Banda donated 20 cows to selected poor families.
Chiponda said she defected to PP after noting that President Joyce Banda is a great woman.
“I am a veteran in politics as I started it during the time of Kamuzu Banda. I am therefore no fool to defect to your party. I noted the greatness in you which has been confirmed by an accolade you have just received as the most powerful woman in Africa,” she said.
While claiming that Njonja is her home, Chiponda said the area has been neglected since the first president, Kamuzu Banda died.
“This is the poorest area in Dedza as you have seen for yourself. Since the death of Kamuzu Banda no president has ever visited this area. Thank you for helping people here with the cows,” she said.
