In the U. S., the Memorial Day holiday is fast approaching and with it a surge in bookings for Grand Canyon helicopter tours.

The special occasion is on Monday, May 26. Thus it\’s a three-day weekend, which means there\’s lots of interest to see the National Park.

As such, I recommend booking your helicopter as soon as you make your hotel arrangements. Hopefully, you can purchase your helicopter ride at least a week or two in advance.

There are two places from which to visit the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and Phoenix/Scottsdale, with Vegas being the most popular so we\’ll start there.

First, understand that Las Vegas helicopters only go to the West Rim (there are two rims, the West Rim and the South Rim). And this is a good thing.

How so?

Because the West Rim is the only place where you can take a helicopter below the rim and land at the bottom. That\’s pretty extraordinary.

Vegas travelers can pick between air-only and landing tours. Aerial flights go over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon and the Skywalk.

Landing tours do the same thing plus land at the bottom or the top of the Canyon. The bottom-landing tour is by far the most popular. It comes with lunch and can be extended to include a Colorado River boat ride.

Another thing Vegas travelers need to be aware of is from whence you fly from. There are two locations: The Las Vegas Strip and Boulder City. You want The Strip.

Why?

Because it\’s more convenient. Not only that, but most Strip departures come with free limousine hotel pick up and drop off. And, finally, you get to fly from the top of The Strip to the bottom.

Now that\’s pretty cool!

South Rim helicopter tours are ideal for those travelers already in Arizona (e. G. Phoenix, Sedona, Flagstaff, etc.). There are no helicopter rides that land at the bottom of this Rim.

But it really doesn\’t matter.

That\’s because the South Rim aerial tours are incredible in and of themselves. Pick from 30-minute and 50-minute flights. Me, I prefer the later because you get to see up to 75 percent of the National Park.

There\’s also a host of South Rim \”combo\” trips that include sunset Jeep tours (these are \”soft\” off road adventures) and Harley Davidson motorcycle rides. I\’m sure more kinds of trips will spring up but these are the most popular.

One key thing to keep in mind: Always try to fly deluxe. I say this because deluxe trips utilize the EcoStar 130 helicopter, which is the best helicopter flying over the Canyon these days.

These aircraft are equipped with 180-degree windshields, stadium-style seats and a cabin that\’s 25% bigger than conventional helicopters. Combine these features and it\’s the only way to fly.
