There are a lot of ways to experience the Grand Canyon. But for the most unique experience possible, consider taking a Papillon Helicopter tour to the National Park.

Papillon, which is the largest Grand Canyon sightseeing company on the planet, operates from Las Vegas, NV, and Tusayan, AZ, the small town at the entrance of South Rim.

From Las Vegas, helicopter travelers can visit the West Rim and from Tusayan you\’ll see the South Rim. There are no flights from Vegas to the South Rim – it\’s too far to fly. And there are no connecting flights between the rims.

That said, if you want to see South Rim from Las Vegas, I recommend you take the airplane tour that comes with a helicopter ride. It\’s the quickest way to cover the 277 miles to South Rim and you\’ll see some incredible scenery en route.

Air & Landing Tours

There are two kinds of helicopter flights available from Vegas: Aerial and landing tours. Both take the same flight path to the Canyon and go over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, the Colorado River, Grand Cliffs Wash and more. Once in Canyon airspace, you\’ll either turn back or land.

Landing tours are unique in the fact that you can only do them from Vegas and at the West Rim (such flights are banned at South Rim). Specifically, you can fly to the bottom for a picnic or a boat ride on the Colorado or you can land on top and do the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

The Skywalk, which is known as the Glass Bridge, is one of the 21st Century\’s most significant feats of engineering. It\’s made entirely of glass and lets guests walk up to 70 feet past the edge. And by the time you reach the end of the walkway you\’ll be standing some 4,000 feet over the bottom!

Las Vegas Strip

Papillon flights depart from either the Las Vegas Strip or from Boulder City, a small suburb that requires a 30-minute shuttle trip. Frankly, I prefer flights that leave from The Strip because they are more convenient and include hotel limousine pick up and drop off. Further, they include a flight over The Strip on return.

Indeed, Las Vegas Strip departures, which I refer to as \”deluxe tours, \” are more expensive, but when you add up all the perks and convenience, they are the much better value compared to trips that depart from Boulder City. In the end, it will depend on how much time you have and your budget.

Papillon\’s most popular South Rim flights are the 30-minute and the 50-minute tours. The shorter one goes from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. The longer one does the same except it also covers everything up to the far east border of the Park. By the time you finish the 50-minute flight you\’ll have seen up to 75 percent of the National Park.
