Las Vegas is a major summer destination for summer holiday travelers. And one thing folks like to do is visit nearby Grand Canyon National Park by helicopter or airplane.

The Canyon, by the way, is actually quite close from Las Vegas, located about 120 miles to the east. Helicopters can make the trip in 45 minutes and airplanes can do it in 30 minutes.

There are a plethora of flights from which to choose and one of the key things you need to know is that they must be booked in advance. I typically recommend a week or more in order to get the best flights at the lowest rates.

Helicopter Tours

There are two kinds of helicopter tours: Air and landing. Both essentially follow the same flight plan over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, the Mojave Desert, the Colorado River and the West Rim.

Where they differ is that air tours fly back to Vegas and landing tours go to either the bottom or top of the National Park.

Air-only flights are great for travelers who have limited time for sightseeing or on a tight budget. If possible, however, always try for a landing tour because the experience is much more comprehensive.

The landing tour that I like the most is the one that flies to the bottom for a Champagne Picnic. And if I really want to take it to the next level, I\’ll add a boat ride down the Colorado River.

The other landing trip that gets a lot of attention is one that goes to the top and comes with Grand Canyon Skywalk VIP passes (the Skywalk, by the way, is the all-glass bridge that lets you walk 70 feet over the edge!).

Airplane Tours

Plane tours are similar to their helicopter counterparts in that there are air and landing tours except they fly at a higher altitude and DO NOT land at the bottom of the Canyon.

Plane rides tend to be cheaper than helicopter tours. They\’re also the better option if your group is larger than six people because planes hold up to 19 people and helicopters up to six.

My favorite plan tour package is the one that lands at the top of the West Rim and includes a helicopter ride to the bottom with a boat ride and Skywalk passes. I call this the \”mega\” tour and simply put this is the one you want if you want to see it all.

I also want to remind folks that it\’s hot in Las Vegas and at the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. Please dress comfortably. More specifically, bring sunglasses and sun block and wear shorts, a hat and sunglasses. Always have at least a liter of water handy, as it\’s important to stay hydrated.

Conclusion

Las Vegas is the ideal place from which to stage and air tour to the Grand Canyon. Options are helicopter and airplane and both have air or landing versions. For my money, I\’d go with a landing tour as it\’s much more satisfying and you\’ll see more of the Canyon. Further, always RSVP your flight during summer. I recommend at least a week but two weeks is probably better because you\’ll get the flight you want at a better price.
