Lots of travelers are unaware of the fact the Grand Canyon is just 120 miles away. And when they do discover this, they immediately sign up for a Canyon helicopter tour.

Now there are two kinds of Vegas flights from which to choose: Air-only and landing. The former is your cheapest option while the later offers you more opportunities to explore the National Park.

Both air and landing tours follow the same flight pattern, which includes going over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, the Mohave Desert, the Skywalk and the West Rim itself.

Landing Tours

Once over the Canyon, the air-only tours will turn back and head to Vegas while the \”landers\” will go to either the bottom or the top of the Park.

I do want to point out that Las Vegas helicopters are extremely popular during summer and often sell out. To avoid this, please try to book your flight at least a week or two in advance.

This is especially true if you are a group of 4 or more people because helicopters only hold six and thus getting seats is extra challenging. If you are unable to get seats, consider booking an airplane tour.

From Las Vegas, you can fly from The Strip or from neighboring airports that ring the City. The outlying departure points are cheaper but require a 40-minute shuttle ride.

The Strip

By contrast, if you leave from The Strip, you\’re only 10 minutes from the heliport, which is very convenient. Further, most Strip departures include a stretch limousine that picks you up and drops you off at your hotel (very nice if you\’re celebrating a special event).

I do recommend that you dress comfortably for these tours because Las Vegas is hot – temperatures are now regularly in excess of 100 degrees. To this end, wear shorts, a hat, sunglasses, sun block, and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt. And always bring water.

I also get a lot of requests for front seats. Understand that front seats are never guaranteed. This is because seating is determined by overall weight of all passengers. However, some tour companies will sell such seats but only at check-in and even then they\’re not guaranteed.
