I know that there are many bars and clubs in Houston to choose from when I want to go out. Depending on what you may feel like doing that particular night can really determine where you might like to go and have a good time. For me, one of the most important things in choosing where to go is that the place has draft beer available. If I am going to have a beer, draft is the way to go. It tastes so much better when it comes from a tap that I would almost rather not have certain beers in a bottle. There are five in particular that I like to look for when I go out.

I admit it; I am pretty much a beer snob. I won’t drink your standard American beers that you see at nearly every bar, club and restaurant today. Most of that stuff I find to be good for only getting a headache and a hangover. If I am going to have a draft beer, it needs to have some flavor to it.

My first choice is always to go with some kind of imported draft beer. These beers always seem to have the best flavor. This is particularly true of the beers that come from places like Ireland and England. I’ll always choose one of these first if I have the chance.

There are a few other European beers that can be pretty good as a draft beer. I do like a lot of the beers from Germany and Belgium. They have a great flavor, particularly the wheat beers that come from that area. They are not always easy to find on draft, but if you can, they are worth a try.

Of course, there are some American beers that are good as a draft beer. While these may not include the typical beers you find (at least in my opinion), there are a number of them that offer some different seasonal flavors that are quite good. Depending on the time of year it determines which you can get, but most of them are pretty good.

I’ll go out of my way to find a bar or club that carries some American microbrew beers as well. Microbrews may not have the exposure or distribution that the big beer companies have, but they sure carry much better flavor than the big boys do. You can find more and more places offering beers like this on draft today because they have become so popular.

I have to say that they aren’t a lot of bars and clubs in Houston that disappoint me when it comes to beer selection. While there are some that don’t have draft beers, I usually stick to my regular haunts to get the drinks that I really like. Next time you are out and about, take my advice and give a draft beer a try. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised what you find.
