Let me just say upfront that I am not a dancing machine. As a matter of fact, I am pretty sure it could be plainly said that I am a terrible dancer. That doesn\’t mean I don\’t like to do it, it just means I am bad at it and do it anyway. The point is, whenever we are having a Houston nightlife chat among friends, there are always spots I mention because I love to go to them a dance and be crazy.

Any dance club has the potential to be the best dance spot around if the conditions are right. I have found over time that you really need to see how the evening progresses if you want to determine how good the dancing is going to be. Very often, it doesn\’t start to get crazy until later on in the evening.

To me, the most important thing you need to lead to a great dance night is the DJ. Without somebody who really knows what they are doing, you are going to have a dance party like it was when you went to your Aunt Dottie\’s wedding. You won\’t be impressed, no one will want to dance and you may as well call it an early night.

A DJ who really gets into it, however, can make all the difference in the world. He can gage how the crowd is and how it will react to be sure he is playing all the tunes and mixes that people really want to hear. If you have action like this, then the evening is going to take off fast.

Besides good music, you need to have good people to dance with. Say what you want about dancing, but it is the girls who are present that determine whether the dancing is good or bad. Girls are just much better dancers than guys are, even if they are just dancing with each other. They can get more people out on the dance floor, even if it is just to watch them and what they are doing.

Beyond that, I think you need some good lighting to really turn things up. If it\’s too dark, I don\’t like it. You need just the right blend of flashing lights and colors to match the music being played to really get the crowd going and the dance floor grooving.

It all sounds pretty simple to me. Every week when we have our Houston nightlife chat, we pick out a few dance clubs where we know we can count on a good time. Next time you\’re out at the dance clubs, check around and see if I am right. If a club has all these things, you can pretty much guarantee a good time. I\’ll be easy to spot out on the dance floor too. Just look for the guy everyone is staring at and wonder what he is doing.
