That being said, Rhea Drysdale, the CEO of Outspoken Media, Inc, recently posted a blog on SEOmoz that does a great job in answering several questions on how to build organic links that people have been asking. Since she covers such a broad range of topics, I’ll go ahead and narrow it down. The first question on about how to build organic links that was extremely enlightening was one that asked how to build quality links without having the ability to constantly update the organic content on the website. Off of the top of her head, Rhea suggests identifying ways to include testimonials, case studies, and product reviews from your target demographic as a way to keep the site fresh. Further, Rhea offers her opinion on press releases: she hates them. As she puts it, “They’re over-saturated, and it’s rare that a press release attracts any press attention.” That being said, she says that they can be important in terms of public relations.
When learning how to build organic links, SEOs often find themselves wondering what they should do when they are working in a very competitive niche that doesn’t always use white hat tactics. She advises the asker to focus on their own business strategy rather than waste energy focusing on the competition. If you stick to the business and marketing strategy, and if it’s a successful one, you will be successful no matter what your competition is doing. The invisible hand will sort out the bad SEO’s in time. One practice she advises the reader to avoid is “link buying”. Sites that sell or buy links will be punished and penalized by Google, and that’s why this practice should be avoided. Further, she goes on to say that building broken links, while still effective, is relied on far too much. If this has become the main form of link building, there are deeper issues. Doing so is not “investing in the development of your brand at all.”
The importance of the ratio between followed and no followed links is a common question when learning how to build organic links. Follow links are those that you are encouraging your site readers to follow and that you trust, while no follow links are those that link to sites that you don’t know as much about. Because people can be penalized for links to bad websites, no follow links are a good way to waive liability.
According to her, it is not extremely important, but there is “no threshold, but too much of one or the other probably looks unnatural.” It can indicate that a site is over optimized. On that note, she also says that her company puts ample time into making sure that they don’t earn links from sites that don’t meet their standards. While standards can change from industry to industry, client to client, there are warning signs that they avoid every time. Quite obviously, Rhea is extremely knowledgeable about the organic SEO industry.
