There may be foods that are causing negative reactions in your body, but you are not aware of it because you’ve been living this way for a long time. When your body is full of toxins, it is difficult, if not impossible, to pinpoint what might be the culprit to you not feeling 100%. For example, I lived with a slight allergy my entire adult life. My eyes watered a little and I always seemed to have some drainage in my throat. I, of course, thought this was “normal”. After detoxing, I noticed that my eye-watering and throat-draining symptoms were gone! I hadn’t had any gluten in quite a while, so when I decided to go out to breakfast I was definitely going to have some pancakes! In about an hour or two I noticed drainage in my throat again! I have stayed away from gluten ever since. When your body is free of the build up of toxins, you can better pinpoint what your body reacts negatively towards.
What Is Gluten?
Gluten is the generic name for several different proteins found in grains, especially wheat, but also in spelt, rye and barley. Gluten is responsible for the sticky or elastic texture of dough. Gluten is difficult to digest and causes bloating or “pot belly.” It has also been tied to causing focus issues, migraines, ADHD, and asthma.
Our bodies could more easily digest wheat being produced 50+ years ago. Modern wheat on the market today is a new breed, much different than the grains of our ancestors. It is now cross-bred, which has created modern wheat which is neither physically nor genetically like its old self. The book “Wheat Belly” says that two slices of wheat toast today spikes your blood sugar higher than a Snickers bar!
Why Eliminate Gluten?
Being gluten-free is more than just the latest fad. There are multiple studies that show gluten can cause harmful effects.
1.Many brain disorders are associated with gluten and patients see dramatic improvements on a gluten-free diet
2.Gluten may cause adverse effects, even in people who don’t have gluten sensitivity
3.Gluten may have negative effects on the barrier function of the intestine, allowing unwanted substances to “leak” through into the bloodstream
4.Many studies have found strong statistical associations between gluten, celiac disease, including Type 1 Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis
5.The immune reaction to gluten can cause degeneration of the intestinal wall, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, anemia, and chronic fatigue
6.Gluten is associated with autoimmune diseases
And the list goes on & on & on. Long story short. . . the ONLY way to find out if your body is responding negatively to gluten, is to not have any gluten for at least 28 days. Reintroduce it, if you like, after that time. You’ll know pretty quickly after ingestion whether gluten is problematic to your body. . .or not. Isn’t it worth finding out?
The Availability Of Gluten-Free Products
Gluten-free products are much more widely available these days. You can find them in non-specialty grocery stores and even in Wal-mart! It is much easier to be gluten-free these days as both the availability of gluten-free products and the flavor has greatly improved over the years! You’ll also find that more and more companies are labeling their “gluten-free” products right on the package. This is all good news.
