MLB Tickets – Fantasy: Under-the-Radar Starters
Here are some under-the-radar starting pitchers that should produce good numbers in fantasy baseball in 2010:
David Price, Tampa Bay Rays: Brand Cialis I am surprised with how little hype there is surrounding him this season. He was all the rage of the fantasy world a year ago, but one up-and-down year has really taken the sizzle out of his name. If he can exhibit better control this season, he could be a huge bargain. We know he’s got the stuff and he’s on a good team. Consistency will be the key for Price.
Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins: OK, he was a train wreck last season, but he was still recovering from elbow surgery. He was fantastic in winter ball this offseason and looked strong in the spring. I don’t think he’ll necessarily return to the pitcher he was before his injury, but he’s got major strikeout potential. Command could be an issue here.
Phil Hughes, New York Yankees: He won the fifth spot in the rotation this spring and I think it could be his breakout season. He’s got really good stuff and should get a ton of run support. He’ll have his ups and downs, but I think the ups will outweigh the downs.
Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox: Buchholz in is a similar situation to Hughes. He’s at the back end of a really good rotation and will have a quality offense working for him. He pitched well last season and I think he’s got the talent to put up some huge games in 2010.
J.A. Happ, Philadelphia Phillies: Nobody seems to be taking notice of the fine 2009 campaign he put together. I mean, the guy had a sub-3.00 ERA. A lot of people think he overachieved last year, but even if his ERA rises a bit he should be very useful in fantasy for where you can get him.
Brian Matusz, Baltimore Orioles: This kid has all the tools to become a top-of-the-line starter in the majors. He finished 2009 out extremely strong and should carry that momentum with him. He might not go deep into games much this season, but the strikeouts and ERA should be there.
Jeremy Bonderman, Detroit Tigers: Most people have probably forgotten about him. Just a few years ago he was an exciting hurler that sold MLB tickets every time he took the mound. Injuries and mechanics problems have plagued him over the past couple of seasons, but I think he’s figured some things out and could be in for a bounce-back year in 2010.
C.J. Wilson, Texas Rangers: The Rangers are converting him to a starter and he’s definitely got the potential to fan a lot of batters as long as his arm holds up with the increased innings.
Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks: A former top prospect in the Yankee farm system, Kennedy has struggled in the bigs thus far, garnering the label of a AAA All-Star in some circles. He’ll get a shot to make a name for himself in the desert, though, and the upside is there.
Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees: He’s not going to wow you, but his ERA could come in under 4.00, which will result in a good amount of wins playing on the Yanks.
