As you begin, make sure you know what the company regulations are about decorating. Peek into the work areas of your managers and company executives, and follow their lead. Your goal is to personalize without over-decorating. Put up photos and artwork that reflect your interests and that will fit in with the atmosphere of the company. For example, a black and white photograph of a fishing boat on a lake will be more appropriate than a fishing pole on the wall–unless you work at an outdoor recreation company. Limit family pictures to one or two on your desk or to a small collage board that you regularly update and de-clutter.

Next, bring in some soothing elements. Lighting, for example, will transform your office. Adding a floor lamp or a desk lamp will ease the effects of the harsh fluorescent panels overhead and will make the space seem more comfortable. Plants are another good addition, as long as you maintain them properly. Purchase ferns that will grow well in dim light. Don’t forget to water them, and make sure they’re in pots that won’t drip on your furniture or papers. Trim dead leaves, and replace the plant altogether if it dies. Do not leave a dead plant in your office! In some situations, perhaps an executive office, a water feature may also be appropriate. Be careful here though–you don’t want your office to look like a dentist’s reception room.

Finally, keep your desk well organized. Buy storage compartments for writing utensils, paper clips, and post-its. Purchase an easel or platform where you can lean your day planner. Have coasters on hand for drinks. And find a nice clock to either set on your desk or hang on the wall.

Decorating your office will make it more enjoyable for both you and your visitors. And if you do it right, your professionalism will shine through, making you a better candidate for a promotion.
