There are many things to do in the beautiful state of Colorado like going hunting and shooting. However, there are many gun laws and regulations to be aware of in the state.

This is a general sum of the firearm laws. They frequently change, so be sure to check them out when you get to the area.

For rifles and shot guns, you do not have a permit to purchase them. You also do not have to register or license owners of rifles and shotguns; therefore, you also do not have to have a permit to carry such weaponry.

As for handguns, you do not need a permit to purchase them, nor do you have to register or license owners of them. However, you must have a permit to carry a handgun and it must stay concealed.

There is no state permit required to purchase any sort of rifle, shotgun or handgun. Dealers are required to keep a record on the retail sale, rental or exchange of handguns.

The record shall include the name of the person to whom the handgun is transferred, his or her age, occupation and residence. It must also include the make, caliber, finish and serial number of the handgun and the date of the transfer as well as the name of employee who is making the transfer.

The record book must be open at all times and made available to the inspection of any duly authorized police officer. Before a gun show vendor can transfer or attempt to transfer a firearm, he or she must perform a background check in accordance with the national instant criminal background check system.

This must be conducted of the prospective transferee, and they must obtain approval of the transfer from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation through a licensed gun dealer. It is also unlawful to transfer a firearm if any part of the transaction takes place at a gun show, unless a licensed dealer first obtains a background check on the prospective transferee.

This does not apply to firearms defined as antiques, curios or relics under federal law. Moreover, a Colorado resident who is otherwise qualified can purchase or receive the delivery of a rifle or shotgun in a state contiguous to Colorado, as long as the sale fully complies with the legal conditions of sale in both states and the purchaser, as well as the seller, has complied completely with federal law applicable to interstate transactions.

Furthermore, it is unlawful for any person who has ever been convicted of a felony or conspiracy or attempt to commit a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence or adjudicated delinquent for a felony to possess a firearm. It is also unlawful for any one under the age of 18 to possess a handgun or to provide or permit a juvenile to possess a handgun.

However, there are some exceptions to this law including if the attendant is at a hunter’s safety course or firearms safety course. If they are engaging in lawful target shooting, hunting or trapping with a valid license, they are also exempt.

A few other exceptions include if they are traveling with an unloaded handgun to or from any of those kinds of safe activities. Also, if the juvenile is on real property under the control of his or her parent, legal guardian or grandparent and has gained permission of them to possess a handgun or while at the juvenile’s residence and with permission of such a guardian to handle a weapon for the use of self defense.

It is unlawful to carry a firearm concealed on or about one’s person without a permit, unless the person is in their home, place of business or on property owned or controlled by him or her. These are just a few of the rules concerning firearms in the state of Colorado.
