The 2010 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival kicked off in the Big Easy on April 23, and iconic duo Simon and Garfunkel headlined the four-day music event on Sat., April 24. The long-lasting music festival (now in its 42nd year) featured performances from the likes of Lionel Richie, the Black Crowes, My Morning Jacket, Drake, Allman Brothers Band, Darius Rucker, Widespread Panic, Elvis Costello & the Kamagra Soft Sugarcanes, Blues Traveler, Aretha Franklin, Gipsy Kings, Pearl Jam, Jeff Beck, B.B. King and many more this year, but was all about folk when Simon and Garfunkel performed on April 24.

Simon and Garfunkel opened the show with “Hazy Shade of Winter,” during which Simon noticeably helped out first-time Jazz Fester Garfunkel on the vocals. Spinner reports that Garfunkel told the crowd in explanation, “It’s not that the mike is not on. It’s just that the voice is a little elusive, but I wasn’t going to not come down to New Orleans Jazz Fest.” Shaky vocals or not, the duo delivered renditions of hits like “Scarborough Fair,” “Keep the Customer Satisfied” and “Mrs. Robinson,” which segued into “Not Fade Away” and back again.

Garfunkel exited the stage mid-set and Simon and the rest of the band performed solo songs like “The Only Living Boy in New York” and “Diamonds on the Soles on Her Shoes.” Garfunkel returned for “The Boxer,” and the audience lent their vocals to the chorus “Lie la lie.” The Simon and Garfunkel capped off their New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest performance with “Cecilia.”

Back when the pair announced plans to perform at the Big Easy event, Jazz Fest producer and director Quint Davis released a press release saying, “Thank you Paul and Artie, for bringing your special thrill to New Orleans. No American City can so relate to the need for a ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and the power of being ‘Homeward Bound.'”
Fans that weren’t able to be in New Orleans for Jazz Fest can get Simon and Garfunkel tickets to see the duo in cities like Calgary, Alberta; Fargo, N.D.; Saint Paul, Minn.; Auburn Hills, Mich.; Montreal, Quebec; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Uncasville, Conn.; Atlantic City, N.J.; Portland, Ore. and more online. Simon and Garfunkel’s set lists feature their large catalog of classic songs as well as hits from Paul and Art’s respective solo careers.

Last October, Simon and Garfunkel were among the star-studded performers lined up to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s first 25th anniversary concert. Held at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, the event was also headlined by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Stevie Wonder.

During the show, Paul Simon dedicated a rendition of “Here Comes the Sun” (with Crosby and Nash on the chorus) to the late Beatle George Harrison while also performing his own solo hits like “Diamonds of the Soles of Her Shoes,” “Me and Julie Down by the Schoolyard,” “Call Me Al” and “Late in the Evening.” Garfunkel joined Simon and the pair performed “The Sounds of Silence,” a medley of “Mrs. Robinson” and “Not Fade Away,” “The Boxer,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Cecilia.”
