DIEP Flap Surgery Made Me Feel Like a Woman Again
When I had to have a double mastectomy my first thoughts were not about my appearance afterwards. I was worried about my health and was willing to make the sacrifices I needed to get myself healthy. But once I was in remission and had been back in good health for several months I started to feel as if I had lost part of who I was. I wanted to feel like a woman again and it was hard knowing that a large part of what gave me a feminine look was gone. Fortunately I found a doctor who told me about DIEP flap surgery and how it could give me a natural looking and satisfying result.
He told me that DIEP flap stood for Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator and was named after the artery that connected to the tissue he would be using. I didn’t understand exactly what he meant but I definitely understood when he told me that it was a fairly safe and natural way to restore the look of my breasts.
The biggest advantage over other surgeries that are similar to DIEP flap surgery is that the surgeon was only going to be using skin and fat from my stomach. He said that because there would be know muscle involvement there was far less risk of serious complications such as hernia and infection. I was happy to hear this but he also said because of not having to take any muscle that my Tadacip hospital stay would be fairly short and that my recovery time would be minimal. Needless to say I was thrilled to have this option available to me but nervous about the results. I didn’t know if it would look natural and I thought that no breasts might be better than unnatural ones. My fears were unfounded though.
After I came out of the DIEP flap surgery I definitely felt sore and bruised. I had to stay overnight to be sure there were no complications but by the next day I was feeling much better. I had to wear compression bandages and there were things to drain excess fluid but in a little more than a week they came off. I must say I was sort of shocked when I first saw my new body. Although I was still pretty bruised I could see that there was an incredible change. My breasts were they same fullness and shape they had been before my cancer. My surgeon was able to put the scar from where he took the tissue from my stomach low enough that it was not visible with my pants on. After about two months the swelling and bruising was gone and I was back to my regular habits. I love my new breasts and the DIEP flap surgery had the added benefit of making my stomach look flatter. It was like a tummy tuck in addition to my breast reconstruction.
I could not be more pleased with the outcome of this procedure. I look like my old self and I feel like a woman. Once the physical scars of my cancer had healed it felt good to do something about the emotional ones.
