Competition Heats Up on the Pool Tables
Pool has evolved over many centuries to become the game and classic pastime that it is today. Add in some faces and fierce competition and you now have the competitive sport that it is currently.
There are many teams and individuals that come from all over the world to compete for a title of this particular, popular form of billiards. This is a thrilling experience to participate in or to witness as a spectator.
The APA, American Poolplayers Association, is a governing body of amateur pool and holds national championships every year in August in Las Vegas, NV. Held in the Riviera Hotel and Casino, this event consists of three individual National Team Championships.
One is the Open 8-Ball; this event is open to any combination of men and women and first prize is set at $25,000. This year, it will be held on August 22-28, 2010.
There is also a Ladies 8-Ball held on August 19-22, 2010. This event is open to ladies only and presents a first place prize of $10,000.
The Open 9-Ball is the third and is held on August 19-23, 2010. This event is open to any combination of men and women and has a first place prize of $15,000.
The competition is battled over three and a half by seven foot table, using a modified single elimination format that permits each team the chance to try at least twice before they are eliminated. All qualifying teams receive $350 when they register at this event.
During the National Team Championships, the APA also hosts MiniMania trials which are preregistered 8-ball Doubles, 9-Ball Doubles and Masters Championships in addition to the Wheelchair Challenge for the disabled. MiniMania and other sub events combine to pay out more than $200,000 on prizes annually.
In order to qualify for the National Team Championships, teams will compete at the local level on a weekly basis against other area teams comprising a division of six to sixteen teams. There are three sessions of games each year in the Summer, Fall and Spring.
A playoff is held when each session is completed and is to determine which team will advance to the Local Team Championship, which is held after the conclusion of the Spring session. Teams that are successful on the local level, qualify to compete in the National Team Championship at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For further fairness regulations, a referee may be requested to watch over your game proceedings. There are already many time guidelines and rules of conduct put into place.
While playing in the match, there is to be no loud, abusive or profane language. Also, any unsportsmanlike conduct directed to the opposing player, team or tournament official is not permitted.
Interestingly, any excessively slow playing will not be tolerated. There will be warning before any penalties occur, but the penalties for violations are detailed and can be found under rules of conduct on the APA’s Tadacip website online.
The game of pool is one that is certainly modern. What was once a leisurely pastime is now an intense competition where money and fame is at stake.
