Wicked Tickets – Making Its Way to Hollywood
It’s already been a smash hit on Broadway, and now Wicked will make a mark on the silver screen when the musical progresses toward becoming a movie, reports Deadline. Producer Marc Platt, book writer Winnie Holzman and songwriter Stephen Schwartz have already made plans to bring the characters of Oz, pre-Dorothy, to audiences nationwide with the help of some movie magic. Rumors have suggested Rob Marshall, Ryan Murphy, James Mangold and JJ Abrams have all shown interest in the project, though turning Wicked into a movie is bound to be a big process.
The production, which will be distributed through Universal, will follow in the steps of other storybook fairytales turned billion dollar films like Alice in Wonderland and Mamma Mia! Though it’s clear that Tony Award winner Idina Menzel (who was the original Elphaba) and Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda) had star power, both left the Broadway show years ago. “[Wicked’s] so successful all around the world; they don’t need a movie to make money right now,” Menzel has been reported as saying. “They usually wait ’til something like that dies down a little, and then they get a movie out there to get all the hype again.” With global productions and a team of highly esteemed media men, the roles of Wicked’s most famous characters must be filled with actors who can “defy gravity.”
The long running musical, which has several worldwide productions, is a favorite among theatergoers. The San Francisco original will close its doors for good at the Orpheum Theatre this September, but not before nearly everyone on the West Coast sees the show. The musical recently added two theater veterans, Marcie Dodd and Alli Mauzey, to the show as a reunion of sorts. Both women resume their roles as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, from their Broadway run from November 2008 to February 2009. This time the actresses will close out northern California’s rendition of the musical before its Sept. 5, 2010 closing.
Dodd took on the role of Elphaba in the second National Tour following her role on Broadway, as well as performances with the Los Angeles company. Mauzey, on the other hand, performed as the glitzy Glinda on Broadway and has starred in several other Broadway plays including Lenora in Cry-Baby, a role she originated at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego.
Hailed Tadacip as the “defining musical of the decade” by The New York Times, Wicked has grossed more than $1 billion globally with audiences growing to nearly 30 million. A San Francisco hit within its first week of sales, the musical is adapted from the bestselling novel by local Gregory Maguire, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” The musical, which premiered in San Francisco in May 2003 and moved to Broadway that same year, has won an amazing 35 awards including three Tony awards and a Grammy. The show is currently performing in San Francisco, New York, London, Germany, Japan, Australia and two North American tours.
