An English benefit raising funds for young Palestinian refugees turned into an ’80s explosion of rock when Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Roger Waters reunited for an unannounced show. Waters, who reportedly embraced his Pink Floyd counterpart in a hug, reports the Rolling Stone, went beyond differences in July. Though the performance was short, preparing for the singles “To Know Him is to Love Him,” “Comfortably Numb” and “Wish You Were Here,” was anything but. The group had a sound check with 30 people in tow, yet it was one fan who donated a hefty sum to get the duo to play one more song that made it feel real. The group performed “Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2” for the fan. “People were crying,” Freud said. “I know it sounds corny, but it was magic. David and Roger, they looked so happy up there and they made something so beautiful happen.”

Though it has been decades since Pink Floyd has performed together, Waters has done well on his own. An integral part of Pink Floyd, no doubt, Waters was the musical drive that enabled the group’s success. As the connection bonding original members Syd Barrett, Nick Mason and Rick Wright, Waters helped to write the majority of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, their first LP. When the sophomore A Saucerful of Secrets was released, it was clear that Waters’ strength was in songwriting, a passion he has continued to pursue to this day.

Despite the short-lived success of Pink Floyd, who split following the release of The Final Cut in 1983, Waters has continued to make an effort to include his former bandmates. Most recently Waters announced Gilmour would reunite for a slot on Waters’ The Wall Tour. The album in support remains the most promoted from the group, despite the fact that the 1972 album The Dark Side of the Moon remains their commercial breakthrough. The lyrical efforts from Waters on The Wall made the group legends and enabled Waters to take a larger role in the remaining albums. Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Final Cut and The Wall were all million sellers and mostly Waters’ work, efforts that have continued to get stage time since their release.

Following Pink Floyd’s demise, Waters began releasing solo albums to much exposure. Despite his success on the charts, Waters didn’t tour in the States for more than a decade. He reappeared in 2005 with his former mates for the Live 8 benefit in London’s Hyde Park and released a solo album that year.
