When you want to organize books, it can prove to be a frustrating experience – especially when you don’t have a lot of space from the start. But in learning how to best organize your books, you can begin to see your office or home space be maximized with little frustration. Though the best way to begin any organization project is by getting rid of the items you don’t need, it never hurts to learn how to organize what’s leftover first as you might not have to toss out half of your book collection.

Do You Really Need It?

Books can accumulate easily in your life. While you may think you’re only buying what you absolutely need, the truth is that most people tend to buy more books than they realize. And in time, you begin to see your bookshelves overflow onto the table, the desk, the floor, etc. By taking the time to organize books, not only will your space look more pleasant, but you will also be able to find the books you bought in order to use them most effectively. When you’re not scrambling around to find a book for a test or a project, you will be able to save time and energy. However, you might not need all of the books you own all of the time. So, it’s a good idea to try to go through your book collection first to see if you can donate your books to someone else who might have more space and more use for them.

Think about Vertical Storage

When you’re ready to organize books, you will want to start by looking at the space you do have. While most people only look at the shelves they own, you need to look at the other space that’s not being used. You might not want to add in more shelves, but you can begin to create piles of books which are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also helpful in terms of getting your books out of the way. You will want to put the books you use the least on the bottom of the piles, while books you use the most often should go on the top. Try choosing coloring books to go on a coffee table or a night stand to help you have something pleasing to look at, even when you’re not reading the books.

Unique Storage Spaces

It never hurts to try to find other storage spaces to organize books, even if you don’t use those spaces for what they were intended for. For example, some people actually store their books in their ovens when they don’t use the ovens at all. Just make sure the oven is completely turned off. Or if you don’t use the cupboards in your kitchen, then store books in here. Though these might seem like odd places in which to organize books, they will help you to keep your reading materials in order and out of the way.
