How to Name Your Blog
We all get a little bit of writer’s block from time to time, but it can be especially annoying when you have just set up a blog and you need to give it a catchy, memorable name. Of course you will want your blog name to be perfect, explaining a bit about what your blog contains and at the same time leaving your readers intrigued enough to want more. So how do you go about writing such a title and what can you do to make your blog stand out from all the others out there? With a little creativity and a bit of inspiration then you will be able to come up with a title that will help to drive traffic to your blog.
A good start is to make a suitable checklist. There are several key bits on information that you will want to incorporate into your blog title: you need to inform your potential readers what your blog is about, the title should catch people’s attention, it should be short and punchy, it must be unique, be spelt correctly and it should also include the correct keywords so that search engines will be able to identify what content it contains. When considering your blog title, be sure to incorporate each of these points (assuming you have decided on a topic for you blog).
Once you have gone through your checklist start writing down a few ideas of names on a bit of paper. When you have made a healthy list of potential names for your blog leave your list for a while and perhaps come back to it a few hours later when you will be looking at it with a fresh pair of eyes. When you return to your list try adding a few additional ideas, then read over the titles you have written down so far and choose the one that sounds most appealing to you.
Another good idea is to write down the titles of a few of your favourite songs that may relate to your chosen blog topic. Song names may add a more personal touch to your blog. You may even wish to combine a couple of song names if you think that it may make a more unique and catchy title.
An alternative source of inspiration could be to look at advertisements relating to your particular subject. Browse through some print and web adverts related to your chosen topic and take in the sort of language and themes that they use. This may help inspire you to write a title that will appeal to the audience you are targeting.
It may also help you to look through a few blog directories to see what other people in your niche have done with their blog titles. For all you know, someone may have already chosen a title very similar to one that you are already considering!
Don’t just rely on your own judgement. Ask your friends what they think of some of the titles you have suggested. They may be able to pick out the titles that appeal most to them, or they may even suggest some of their own!
