Preparing Your Dog For Potty Training

It is always comforting to have a dog roaming around your house to keep you company. Many house dogs are calm are really light up the mood whenever you see them. However, these very dogs can be rowdy as well and may make a mess here and there especially if you have not prepared your dog for potty training. Without proper potty training, your dog will go potty randomly causing owners to be very frustrated and may think about punishing the dog. This only worsens the problem and actually reduces the chances of your dog to learn how to potty.

Potty Training Benefits

One of the best things about potty training is that it does more than solving the potty problems. This type of training also doubles as a form of obedience training since the style of training is similar to more advanced training sessions. You portray yourself as the leader of the pack and the dog will see that as you continue to train your dog for potty training.

Think of the potty training as bridge to more training possibilities. Successfully teaching your dog where to potty is a huge milestone because your dog will be more responsive in following instructions when you teach the dog some new habits. Depending on the breed, your dog may even be able to teach other dogs how to potty as well. Finally, you only need to complete the training once. As long as you continue to treat your dog well and feed him or her well, your dog should know exactly where to go and when to go.

It is also a good thing to do first because you know that you have to feed your dog everyday and a good supply of water is needed for endurance. The first day you get your dog, your dog won’t know a thing about potty training unless the previous owner if any taught him or her how it should be done. Getting potty training out of the way can permanently solve day-to-day problems with messy environments.

Getting Started

Once your dog is settled in your home, do not expect your dog to learn how to potty quickly. Give your dog some endurance even before getting started by giving the dog some water every day. Once you see that your dog is energetic and upbeat. Take the dog out and let him or her do some exploring. The key is to get your dog comfortable on a certain spot. Do not get discouraged if your dog does not get the idea the first time. This is normal, but if you are consistent with the potty training, your dog will develop a routine and go to the same spot whenever he or she needs to go. This is considered the fastest way to go in terms of potty training.

One thing you need to keep in mind is to only give rewards if your dog does the right thing. Never reward your dog for doing a mistake, but at the same time, do not punish the dog either because that ruins the momentum that you need in training your dog quickly. Rewards encourage dogs to keep doing the same thing. You can either give some dog treats or go for the simple petting.
