Pfronten Germany
Situated on the border of Tyrol in Austria, Pfronten is located in the southwestern part of Bavaria in Germany. It is a charming ski town which caters to just about everybody. Although it might not be as well known as some of its larger ski resort cousins, Pfronten is undeniably one of the best places for you to go if you want to get some skiing in while at the same time avoiding the large crowds.
It is also at a height of 853m above sea level, and the views you get in Pfronten are simply spectacular. It is also interesting to note that Pfronten lies at the foot of the Breitenberg mountains, the Kienberg mountains and the Falkenstein mountains.
During the winter months, Pfronten is a great place to come and ski (you can use the gondolas to get to the Breitenberg mountains); while in the summer months you will find that there are numerous activities you can take part in outdoors, such as hiking, and mountain biking if you are so inclined.
In fact, there are a goodly number of hotels you can choose from during your stay in Pfronten. This is mainly due to the fact that many tourists tend to stay overnight in Pfronten, using it as a stopping point to get to the Breitenberg mountains.
Besides the skiing which is available in Pfronten during the winter months, there are also a few things which you can do in the town itself, as well as in the outlying areas. This includes taking a trip to the Pfronten museum, also known as the Heritage House, which holds an interesting collection of tools and household items. There is also a Crystal Museum in Pfronten which is quite interesting to explore.
You will also find in Pfronten the highest castle (or schloss as it is also known) ruins to be found in Germany. The Falkenstein Castle is located on Mount Falkenstein at 1268m above sea level and is well worth a visit. There is also the Neuschwanstein Castle and the Hohenschwangau Castle to be found in the same vicinity, making it a good day’s outing. You might even find yourself tempted to come back for a second day to explore the castles.
Another great find in Pfronten is the parish church of St. Nicholas. The existing old church was converted and enlarged in 1780 and it has stood since then. It is found in Pfronten-Berg, and has some truly delightful frescoes and altars for you to see.
Besides this church, you will find that Pfronten also has a number of other churches such as the Chapel of St. Koloman which has frescoes by Bartholomew; and the St. Micheal church found in Pfronten-Steinach which boasts of a remarkably high Rococo altar.
With so many things for you to do while you are in Pfronten Germany, you would be passing up the chance of a lifetime if you were to give this charming town a miss. So don’t delay any longer, come over and see what Pfronten has to offer you – you won’t be disappointed.
