Accounting is often seen as a sophisticated job that can only be handled by those with the brightest and most disciplined minds. Others, on the other hand, often view accounting as a profession ruled by boring men wearing crisp suits trotting around with their briefcases and calculators. Whatever kind of impressions people have though, the truth is that accountants are really important people who make sure that cash flow stay positive and an organization keeps its high profitability. Accountants can give service as auditors, finance directors, or deal with tax planning or small businesses.
Being an accountant is considered one of the most in-demand professions at present because they are rarely left unemployed with the many businesses and organizations needing their services and guidance. To become an accountant, however, there are a couple of examinations and trainings to pass. For those who are aspiring to enter this career, they would need to decide first about the accounting body they want to study on. These bodies are the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), and the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA).
These accounting bodies will be the primary factors that will direct the career paths of the accountants because of the specific specializations they each have. The ICAEW and ACCA, for example, are the bodies taken by those who want to immediately go to practice because they are legalized to sign off audited accountants. The CIMA, on the other hand, cannot do the same as the first two but is the best authority in training those who want to specialize on commerce. CIMA is also concentrated on training aspiring accountants on areas like business management, financial management, and management accounting.
Just like in law, one of the biggest hurdles for those who want to enter accounting career is the examination. Individuals who were able to become members of large auditing companies get to be sponsored in their exams so those who want financial support should strive to enter the popular auditing companies early on. Just like in law exams, the examinations in accounting take approximately three long years to be finished.
Accountants during their early working years usually deal with basic accounting responsibilities that will help them master important skills like how to manage and audit finances, how to communicate to clients regarding the development of their accounts and how to manage major accounts. In due time, they will soon also hold trainees and junior accountants who will be doing for them the basic administration work. Another good thing about this profession is that it poses a lot of possibilities to help someone gain a promotion. In fact, it is no longer considered unusual for a 30-year old accountant to serve as a Finance Director of a large organization. Moreover, accountants have easier jobs nowadays because of the computer software and advanced accounting systems that they can use to help them with their work. Software for accounting are also produced by people who are accountants themselves plus the innovative talent of people who are very good in creating software.
