Toulouse France
France with all of its wonderful cities, towns and interesting culture is a fascinating place to spend some time. Here in this marvelous country you will find the lovely city of Toulouse. Toulouse is a city which is located in the Midi-Pyrenees region. While you can safely state that it lies in the south west part of France it is more accurate to note that Toulouse is the Chef-lieu – it is pre-eminent from an administrative perspective – of the Haute-Garonne department in France.
The city of Toulouse is situated on the banks of the Garonne River. It can be found to be roughly halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Paris lies about 590 kilometers away from Toulouse. The present day city has been built over the site of an ancient Roman settlement evidence of which can still be found today. Take for example the smaller streets in the city. These smaller streets can be seen to be following the route given by their ancient Roman counterparts.
Of course when you look at many of the buildings which adorn the city you will see they have been built in a pseudo-Roman style which is definitely not from the Roman times. However the red bricks which have used provide these buildings with the needed Roman look. It is the use of these red bricks which have provided Toulouse with its nickname La Ville Rose which in English means The Pink City.
Once you have looked at the fabulous architecture of Toulouse you may wish to see some of the interesting sights that you can find here. These will include places like the magnificent fountain in Wilson Square. In this “square” you will be able to see a statue of the poet Pierre Goudouli sitting atop some sculptured rocks with his hat off. This sculptured statue was carved here in 1898.
From this statue you may wish to head over to the Basilique Saint Sernin. This is a church which was built sometime during the 11th century. It has since this time been partially restored by Viollet-le-Duc who was a well known French architect. The Basilique Saint Sernin is known to be the largest Romanesque style church in the whole of Europe. Within the church you will be able to look at what is considered to be the most beautiful pipe organ in the whole of France.
Lovers of historical buildings will find visiting the Musee des Augustins to be an interesting place. Here in this former Augustine Convent with its Gothic styled cloister you will be able to look at a number of artifacts which were used by the inhabitants of this convent.
These then are the sights that you will see when you come to visit the city of Toulouse. There are however still many more wonders which are waiting to be discovered. So the next time you are in the mood for a fabulous French holiday you should consider visiting the city of Toulouse. The memories that you gather from here will last you a lifetime.
