Why Not Computer Science?
Why not computer science? Having a degree in this field tells possible employers a lot about the training and hard work that you overcame to get where you are. Computer Science degrees also have many advantages one of course being that you have the freedom to work from anywhere and second that the demand is constantly increasing. With computer technology advances continuing to be a big area of growth, computer science has found itself to become a popular field of study for many students.
The current status of computer science jobs is vastly growing and in the future is projected to have many job opportunities readily available. This field is also very prospective due to its current average salary of $51K depending on experience and expertise. According to 2007 statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Computer Science bachelor degrees had entry level offers starting at $50K and master’s program graduates starting at $70K. With those averages just being in the starting salaries, there is definitely more potential to grow as one increases their experience and education levels.
As popularity for the field increases, there also becomes difficulty in choosing the right program that fits an individual and his or her lifestyle. Not only is it important to find a program that is in tune a student’s goals but also one that works well with the schedule of the student.
Stanford University has become quite a popular choice for many graduate prospective students due to its reputation for great educators as well as offering courses at the convenience of the student. Computer Science graduate certificates that are available include: Foundations in Computer Science, Databases, Software Systems, and Artificial Intelligence. The program requires students to submit to a 45 unit-training course that will truly immerse students into a challenging and beneficial program. The 45 units are separated amongst 4 different categories: Breadth, Seminars, Depth and Additional Computer Science electives. The breadth requirements have students demonstrate their ability by taking three general courses in mathematical/theoretical foundations, computer systems, and AI applications. The seminar category requires that a student at least complete one 500 level seminar so gain exposure to research activity. Depth requirement then allows the student to pick one specialization to further study from a list of ten specializations. And the final electives allow the student to select general courses in computer science or technical in nature. Overall, the 45 unit program allows the student to pick and choose what they want to study while still getting a well rounded training in the computer science field.
Since Stanford also offers many of its graduate courses online including courses for Computer Science, students have the great ability to gain a graduate certificate on-campus or online. This allows the student more freedom and more time to work the graduate program into their life and therefore make the process of obtaining an additional degree more at ease. But what truly makes the Stanford University Computer Science program special is its ability to uphold education excellence while remaining accessible to any student.
