While Doing Repair by Yourself
Fixing many things around your house by yourself covers the correction, alteration or repair of anything without the help of experts or professionals. For example fixing appliances include diagnosing the problem and then fixing it by you.
Many types of repair projects though could be very complicated or risky and will require qualified handyman or professionals, but very often it is not necessarily so.
I have a friend who actually can fix almost everything. I have been watching him for years and basically I have learn his technique. The major part of his technique is to understand of how broken thing should work properly and what went wrong. Then he decides of how that thing could be fixed if it could be fixed. I have never done much in the house because my motto was: do your job at what you are good at and pay professionals to do their jobs.
Latter then I have a lot of free time on my hand (I have retired) I have decided to try to fix couple of things on my own by using my buddy technique. So by using my buddy technique I’ve tried to fix a couple of thing myself. It went very well. I fixed broken sliding door in my bathroom just by simply figuring out why it is not sliding. I did figured out why it is not working. I went to Lowes and bought new bearings and new rail, replaced them and it worked. My wife was very surprised and I was very proud of myself.
My next project was replacing old thermostat, which did not maintain right temperature, with the new one. My biggest project so far was fixing a leaking Whirlpool Refrigerator. I found instructions of how to do that on internet and followed step by step instructions. Now refrigerator is not leaking. I probably saved a couple hundred bucks. It does not mean that I could do everything my friend can but at least now I have a lot of project to keep me busy plus saving a few bucks.
Bellow I have tried to summarize my armature experience.
It is useful to estimate the limits on the amount of time and money to invest before deciding to go on a repair project. If your estimation happened to be wrong you will never complete the project. You must clearly identify the tasks of resolving the problem, finding the materials, supplies, tools and skills necessary to perform an adequate repair.
Other example such as some home improvement could result in a higher repair costs and you should consider substitution instead of improvements. It can make much sense to upgrade or replace some home system rather then repair dying system.
Some things, like broken windows, appliances and furniture can be taken to the workshops, but repairs can be done very easily by you, such as patching holes with plaster and drywall, cleaning stains, repairing cracked windows and their screens, or replacing broken electrical switches or sockets.
Other remedies may be urgent, such as broken water pipes, broken doors, locks and windows, or leaky roof or water tank. This factor can certainly justify the call for professional help. Handyman in the family becomes adept to deal with such
immediate repairs and avoid damage or loss until the professional help will arrive.
Kitchen considered the heart of the house. With a few hundred dollars many things could be replaced like the kitchen faucet, cabinet doors and door’s handles, lighting fixtures with brighter, more energy efficient once. With a little more money you can replace cabinets themselves or refinish doors and drawers. You can order your replacement doors from many retailers and install it manually.
Beside the kitchen, bathrooms are the most troubled rooms of the house. A lot of thing could go wrong in the bathroom: sliding door could stop sliding, toilet seat needs replacement, drainage problems, bathtub needs re-grouting etc. These things can still be cheaper to do by you self rather than pay for professional help.
The list of things you can fix or replace yourself could go on and on but it requires desire, time and some skills.
The periodic maintenance like inspections, adjustments, cleaning or replacement should be done regularly to ensure the proper functioning of all systems in a house to avoid costly emergencies.
Try to do it yourself. It saves money and it is a lot of fun.
