Flared and Circle Skirts For Autumn and Winter
If you read the fashion magazines, you will have probably worked out by now that the circle or flared skirt is going to be big news this autumn and winter. This is just part of the seasons new silhouette, although there is really nothing new about it as it has been around for decades. The circle skirt is one of the simplest styles of skirt around and is basically just made from a circle of fabric. It can however have various features such as embellishment and petticoats to make it really eye catching. Paul Smiths catwalk collection featured a black quilted knee length skirt teamed with a cropped jumper, at Louis Vuitton a mid calf length skirt was worn with a bustier top, at Marc Jacobs, a thick A line skirt was worn with a tailored jacket and at Mulberry mini style flared skirts were the order of the day.
The circle or flared skirt became popular in the late forties and fifties. They have also been described as full skirts and dirndls. The great thing about these styles of skirts is that they suit all types of body shape creating curves for very slim ladies and helping to disguise the hip and thigh area for those who are more of a pear shape. The beauty of the circle skirt is that it achieves fullness without gathers at the waist. This cuts down on bulk around the waist and hips which can be really unflattering. Instead it creates a nipped in waist which is incredibly feminine. This look is reminiscent of Christian Dior’s New Look. There are various different options that you can choose from and allowing you to find the best sort of circle skirt or a flared skirt that works for you. The amount that the skirt flares can range from a full circle which can be laid flat as a full circle to those with less of a flare. The weight of the fabric and petticoats will also affect how much the skirt flares out.
The most flattering length is usually about knee length or just below but for those who have great legs and want to show them off an above the knee length is also a great option. For shorter ladies a very flared style can be a little over powering, so the best option is to choose a soft and draping fabric that does not stick out too much.
Another great thing about a circle skirt is the way that it swishes as you walk along. You may even get the urge to twirl around to show off the skirt to its full potential.
Circle and flared skirts work well as everyday skirts but can also look as evening skirts. The work best with a close fitting top either worn over the top of the waist of the skirt with a belt or for thinner tops tucked in. At medium heel is an essential for all bit the tallest of ladies when wearing a flared skirt to help keep everything in proportion.
