New Jersey to Host Annual GFOA Conference

The New Jersey Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) 2010 Conference will be held at the Sheraton Convention Center Hotel in Atlantic City. The conference will be held from September 22 to 24. This annual event brings together the public finance specialists in order to help them to develop and improve technical and managerial skills. It is also focused on providing information on current issues affecting the governmental professional.

This conference plays an important part in keeping the attendees updated by offering some of the most knowledgeable speakers in the field. Additionally, there is an outstanding exhibit area that is used to display financial management services. Participants also enjoy the annual business meeting which allows for an exchange of information among the people in attendance. Finally, it helps everyone to keep current with continuing educational requirements.

The official opening of the conference will begin on the first day at 10:00 a.m. The New Jersey Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno will be the guest speaker. The first day will also offer a presentation by the State Treasurer of New Jersey, Andrew P. Sidamon-Eristoff. He will offer an important talk about the state fiscal 2011 budget. Dr. Richard McCormick, President, Rutgers University, will conclude the morning session. His topic is Global Research. The afternoon will open with speaker Len Britain discussing Standards for Fiscal Sustainability Reporting. The day will conclude with a presentation on Important Issues of Intergovernmental Finance followed by Excel Tricks. The final presentation will be a Calculation Workshop.

Thursday will open with a presentation by Edward McManimon discussing the Critical Financial Strategies for N.J. Local Governments in Troubled Times. Other morning presentations will include Ethics in Municipal Government, followed by Revised Government Auditing Standards in 2011. The first afternoon presentation will be Fair Value Measurements – Current Economic Crisis followed by Preparation of Water Operating Annual Financial Statement. The remainder of the day will allow for a vendor’s reception in the exhibit area. A part of the conference will have a great focus on business and payroll services and how these areas relate to our present economy and needs.

This professional conference generally attracts more than 600 participants. Opening the event will feature the Speaker President of GFOA U.S. and Canada Len Britain offering a Power Point presentation on the Standards for Fiscal Sustainability. The following day’s opening speaker will be Maria Buchanan. She will also offer a Power Point presentation on the Revised Government Auditing Standards.

The GFOA of New Jersey has a long history. It was founded in 1937. The organization was formed to serve the financial needs of the governmental community in the state. The organization features training as one of the most important components. It is also dedicated to reviewing legislation affecting the finance administration of governmental units. It is also designed in order to promote in-service training programs for governmental employees involved with finances. Finally, the group is dedicated to fully cooperate with the projects and goals of the Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S. and Canada.
