Today’s boilers are a far cry from the old cast iron monsters of yesteryear. Huge behemoth giants lurking in the darkest corner of the basement. The most common type of hot water heating system, usually consists of a boiler and radiation, connecting the boiler with copper tubing. Along the way, radiation, the heating system, valves and pumps, flow checks and expansion tanks are incorporated into the piping system. The normal system will be a closed circuit, or loop. Each loop will exit a boiler, travel through the element rendering it’s heating properties to fin tube baseboard along the way. Eventually making it’s way through the area being heated and back into a boiler to start all over again.

Along the way the water in the loop is heated at the boiler, pumped through the radiation. This action is controlled by a remote thermostat located in the area of that zone. Each thermostat is connected to an electrical relay controlling the system. This relay in turn, receives a call from it’s respective thermostat and fires the boiler while turning on the pump for that zone. Heated water circulates through the baseboard or other type of radiation and heat is transferred to the room.

Efficiency rating is a huge concern when thinking about a new boiler. After all, this is a large investment. The difference between 80% efficiency and 95% can be staggering in price. Always remember that the savings in fuel could possibly offset this cost in a few short years.

Higher efficiency units are in demand today. People think green and emissions from oil and gas burning appliances are a big concern. High efficient boilers are a major part of this movement, to a cleaner greener world. Boiler manufacturers are doing their part. Bringing out higher rated burners and more energy conscious units every day. Offering rebates to their customers who go the extra step and purchase the higher end product.

Boilers have been used for over a century to heat our homes, this isn’t changing soon. They will always be the heart of the hot water system. From the days of steam boilers, to today’s new aluminum block, modulating, computerized gas boilers. Micro computers have recently been introduced to the heating system. Controlling many zones at one time. Modulating the gas valve is another recent revision to some high end units. This saves fuel by regulating the gas, according to input from outside sensors and other variables. Today’s systems have become sources of great comfort for home living, a strong contradiction to the worrisome boilers from the past.
