One of these that you should not miss is a ride on the only trackless train to operate in the country. It’s a great way for the whole family to see and enjoy the many highlights of Malta.
Train Ride Overview
The Melita Train ride is a sightseeing train tour that takes place on an almost daily basis in Malta, so it will be easy to organise a trip on your Malta 5 star holiday. It is described as the only trackless train tour in Malta, and that’s because although it is described as a train, it is actually a diesel-run vehicle that runs on the roads rather than on train tracks. This allows it to go to places that it would otherwise not be able to visit, and it provides visitors with a fantastic way to see the area. Named the Peprina, the train is built in an old-fashioned style, and this allows it to blend in with its historic surroundings. It consists of four units which allows it to carry a number of people around on each of its tours.
The Route
The train departs from the terminus next to the Domus Romana, outside Mdina, so s convenient to get to from your Malta 5 star hotel. From here it travels to Rabat, then Mtarfa and finally the outskirts of Mdina. The whole tour lasts about 30 minutes in total, and the route is eight kilometres long. On the tour you will see the Mdina Main Gate, St Paul’s Cathedral in Rabat, Ghar Barka, the Clock Tower in Mtarfa, and you’ll also get to see fantastic views of Mdina and Mosta. During the tour you can listen to an interesting commentary about the historical significance of the area, as well as finding out about the cultural and archaeological points of interest and the fascinating heritage of the area. A bit of history will allow you to appreciate your surroundings even more during your Malta 5 star holiday.
Details of the Tour
The Peprina departs numerous times a day all throughout the year, and operates in all weather conditions. However, it is closed for some holidays, so check before you plan your trip from your Malta 5 star hotel. The train can carry up to 58 people and is suitable for wheelchair users. There is no need to book in advance unless you travel as a larger group.
