How to Create a Peaceful Outdoor Retreat
If you have a backyard, even if it is small, you can turn it into a great outdoor space. Even if your outdoor space is not around the back of your house, you can create privacy and peace in the outdoors. This helps your family spread out and take advantage of the extra space and it gives you an area to retreat to when the weather is comfortable and the sun is shining. Outdoor spaces can be as simple as just a chair in the middle of the lawn, or you can turn an outdoor area into a living room, complete with furniture, heating and lighting elements, and dining space. If you want to create a great outdoor space, there are plenty of options for making the area feel as great as any of your indoors spaces. Consider adding ambiance with wind chimes and other garden decor.
Color is important in an outdoor space just like it is indoors. The good news is, you do not have to do much to add color to the outdoor space. Colors are all around you outdoors and if you have flowers growing or other plants in the area it will add even more color. You can choose a variety of decorative items that also add splashes of color. If you truly want to create an intimate, colorful space, paint the back of your house to complement the rest of the outdoor space.
Be sure to add plenty of comfortable furniture to your outdoor room, just as you would indoors. The best way to shop for furniture outside is to figure out how you plan to use the room. If you will be entertaining and dining in the area, you will need plenty of dining and seating space. If you just want to lounge in the area with your family, set it up as you would an indoor space with the same purpose. Be sure to remember tables and areas for sitting drinks and plates of food.
One of the most important things to add to an outdoor space is privacy. Since you are outside, the area may not be naturally private. If you can add fencing or shrubs along the perimeter of your yard you can avoid the prying eyes of neighbors and more comfortable in your space. You can also build privacy screens around certain areas in the yard for even more privacy. This way if you are swimming and you want to dry off or change into other clothes, you have a private area to do so.
Lastly, provide protection from the elements. While you cannot protect all of the furnishings from rain and wind, you can make the area accessible when the weather is less than stellar. Add a heating element to the area and provide cover over a few pieces of furniture. Some people prefer to screen in an outdoor space to really gain protection from weather like the wind, rain, and hot sun. This way you can enjoy the outdoors no matter the season.
