Decorating Don’ts
Of course, we all know there are dos and don’ts when it comes to decorating. But do we really know all of them? Here is a list of what kinds of don’ts you should follow.
Don’ts and then the do’s
Remember not to paint the room first. Everyone always thinks that painting is the first step. This is not true. Do choose the carpeting and furniture first. This way you can paint the room a color that matches the decor. It’s less expensive to buy paint then it is the furniture.
Make sure not to make your favorite color the main color. If you like a certain color, don’t make it the particular color for the entire room. Do choose a color that compliments and still include your favorite color in the process by accenting with it. This can add to the look of your room, making it more comfortable and stylish. Accent with candles, centerpieces, blankets, wall art, mantle, and more but make sure that you don’t over do the decor.
Don’t let the furniture hug the walls. Do pull together pieces in an area close together so people can chat and feel welcome. This will create a lovely space for you to live in and the guests to visit. This area should have the furniture facing each other without facing the television. When guests come over, they want to feel welcome and important and to make that happen, you need a sitting area designed just for that.
Whatever you do, do not keep mismatched furniture. Having items that don’t match just makes for an uneven design. If you can, paint wood to match the other furniture, and throw out the old furniture and try on a new look. Do use slipcovers on the furniture that you like but they look old. This will give them a new look.
Do not, and this should be a general rule, do not display every single personal item. Whether it is collectibles or anything else you use to collect. Don’t overcrowd your home. Do pack some away and change them every now and again. There is a place for everything and sometimes that isn’t on the shelves. Create an organized box of supplies for every season so you know at a glance which box you need to grab when you need it.
And last but not least, don’t forget the details. Don’t just paint the walls and set the furniture. Decorate using your own style to add some flare and zest. You will be creating a place to call your own, that you expressed yourself with. Learn the mood of the room and use that for your decor. The mood you set in the room will have an affect on you and everyone who enters your room. Do accessorize correctly so that the room looks complete. Make sure that the area rugs compliment the curtains and the wall art is placed evenly on the walls. Highlight areas that you want to show off with simple colored flokati rugs.
