This is an industry that is fairly new because the film industry itself is quite new. We are now just over a hundred years into it, from the discovery of capturing action in moving pictures to the technological wonders we have today.
Sometime in the early nineteen hundreds, cinema became a topic that was included in universities in some form or another. They did not separate the actual making of the film from the between the lines approach at that time. This did not come until much later in the century, along with the surge of new psychological findings.
This is when the directors vision came into play. It is when people began to look for meaning behind the movie, what it stands for, what kind of impact it can have on society at large. The growing field and academic professors who decided there needed to be separate studies created this change, developing classes that focused on the psychological impact and meaning of the movie as opposed to the physical creation of it.
You can find schools that are specifically dedicated to the study of movies and art production. They will have courses that will train you how to analyze, what to look for in the characters, the development of the plot and the effects used to get the point across, if there is one. They teach you to analyze what you see from an approach that will allow you to see beyond the obvious, understand new things and gain cultural knowledge. Since our society has become so highly technological, there are many more opportunities to study movies and films.
Many universities and liberal arts colleges will offer numerous methods of learning about culture, society and history with a specific focus on these studies. Each college with create its own curriculum, although the same general approaches are taught to analyzing films and media. They will learn to analyze form and style, gain knowledge into the conceptual shifts of films and will be trained for directing, if that is a future desire.
A person who desires to have a career in film studies will be able to do critical work, production or direction. They will learn all aspects of the history and the dynamics behind analyzing films for their meaning and studying the impact they have on society. They will be able to direct, if they choose, with a clear eye on what they want the movie to say, how it will speak to the audience.
