A person who does not spend a lot of time on the slopes is often ill-prepared for the area or activity. Skiing involves the use of all of your muscle groups and can be very tiring. In addition, a person can become dehydrated very easily when they spend the day on the slopes. Therefore, drinking plenty of water before you begin and carrying water with you if your are going to be cross-country skiing will be important.
The weather on the slopes can change dramatically within minutes. Be sure that you take a GPS with you so that if you get dis-oriented or lost, it will be easy to find you. It will also be helpful to tell people where you are going and when you expect to return.
Many skiers that are lost and injured are difficult to find and assist because they have failed to let anyone know where they are going or when they will return. Most cell phones have a GPS system on them that can be activated if you are on a cross-country journey or are in a new area to ski. Be sure that your phone battery is charged before you leave the lodge for skiing.
There are different types of skis, just like different shoes, made for different terrains and activities. Make sure that the skis you have match the terrain and activities that you are planning to participate in. If you are renting skis, the rental agent will be able to tell you which skis will be most suited for the activities that you are planning.
Take protein or power bars with you when you ski. When the body needs protein or is dehydrated, it is very easy to become disoriented. Power bars are light and will not slow you down, but will be invaluable if you get stuck somewhere or are hungry when you are skiing. Ski jackets have inner and outer pockets so keeping your identification, power bars, and solar blanket in your inner pockets will not disrupt your enjoyment, but will be invaluable when you on the slopes.
Get familiar with the area where you will be skiing. It is important that you know the paths, where the hazardous areas are, and what the skill level of the slopes are. If you are a novice skier, do not go to the top of the mountain and take the diamond, or most hazardous trail down the slope.
It can be fun to ride the lift to the top of the mountain because it is normally provides a beautiful view, however, it is easy to ride the lift back down the slope after you have enjoyed the view without taking the chance of injuring yourself by trying to ski in mountain environments that you are not ready for.
