All About the Electronic Cigarette
The electronic cigarette is a relatively new invention that’s fast becoming a popular way to relieve stress safely.
Although an old rough draft on archive suggests that an inventor named H. A. Gilbert conceptualized e-cigarettes as early as 1965, they didn\’t become commercially viable until 2003 when Hon Lik, an employee of the Chinese pharmaceutical company Golden Dragon Holdings, stumbled on a way to make portable the small parts needed to fuel an e-cig. By late 2004, the company had begun to mass-produce them for the world market.
The design for e-cigarettes isn\’t complicated. It may just be that the reason they weren\’t being produced earlier in our history is that technology wasn\’t ready for them. Some of the earlier e-cig models look like the contraption they are, and can be quite bulky. Many slimmer models have recently been developed that look just like a pen, or a cigarette. With these, it\’s easy to use your e-cigarettes without drawing attention to yourself.
Electronic cigarettes generally include a mouthpiece, an atomizer (an elaborate word for heating coils), some circuitry, and a battery pack. The batteries last about a day, but most starter kits come with two so that you can always have one charging. Inside the mouthpiece of every e-cig is a small cup that\’s filled with a liquid mixture mainly comprised of propylene glycol, which is the same stuff used in smoke machines. Don\’t worry, it\’s an organic compound. Its low toxicity means that it would take a ridiculous amount ingested all at once to be harmful to humans.
This solution often contains a trace amount of nicotine as well, for those customers who are trying to kick their tobacco addiction. However, since it comes in replaceable cartridges, the e-cigarette can also be used nicotine-free. The cartridges typically cost about one-half of what a pack of cigarettes costs, and come in many different flavors. Some companies even imitate the flavor of regular cigarettes so that users can take pleasure in the feel of their favorite brand, without the health risks associated with regular tobacco use.
Indeed, e-cigarettes are a safe stand-in for regular cigarettes. Smoked tobacco products are thought to have claimed the lives of more than 100 million in the 20th century alone. Studies on electronic cigarettes are still ongoing, as they are still a new product, but there are no indications that smoking an e-cig on a regular basis is harmful in any way. Many of the other not-so-subtle side effects related to smoking are also avoided with the use of e-cigarettes; such as yellowed teeth and fingers, or an offensive odor that lingers longer than we wish.
If you\’re a long-time smoker who just can\’t seem to quit, check out electronic cigarettes and see if they can\’t help you wean yourself off of tobacco. Your lungs, heart, and wallet, not to mention your friends and family, will all ultimately thank you!
