Although most of us love to be out and about amongst nature and all the joys that it brings, having nature come into the garden and eat everything that we have tended for maybe years is another question. Indeed, it only takes an hour or so of having some wild animal eating through the flower and vegetables to lay waste to what took months or years to plan. To counteract this, it may be a good idea to use something like deer repellent plants to keep them at bay. Even other forms of deer repellent strategies can be used to so that the garden is protected as much as possible.

Some people do not like the idea of putting in high fences or walls around their gardens since this gives it a very austere look indeed. The feeling of space and freedom is what most people want so they really have to plan to keep things out which should not be in there.

For example, instead of putting in wire fencing which can be electrified, trying out the stick like fittings which do exactly the same job may be less intrusive. These sticks can be hidden amongst the outermost plants and as soon as an animal brushes against it, it gets that uncomfortable tingle from the power supply. Although this will be expensive to run, and not really ecologically sound since power equals energy, it is a more permanent way of teaching the local wildlife that this garden is off-limits.

Along the edges of the garden too, some plants can be put in which the animals just do not like. With a mixture of the electrified sticks, plus these inedible flowers and bushes, it would seem obvious that the creatures will get the message eventually. One wonders about the greenery being enough on their own though since most animals will browse through them looking for something better to eat.

Garden spraying too should send out enough signals to the wild animals to pass on by but this can get rather tedious after some time. Even oils which can be spread on the underside of leaves help but imagine doing this on several acres? The rain does not wash it off though so, if there is no other way, then the gardener may have to resolve to this method to keep these wonderful creatures away from his beloved specimens.

Some people have actually tried using motion operated lighting systems and radios to scare the animals away, but they soon get used to nothing happening once the alarm has been tripped. Indeed, one would get more complaints from the neighbors if the sound system is tripped at night so think carefully before employing this kind of deterrent.

Lastly, no matter what we do, sometimes we just have to realize that these wild spaces belonged to the animals before they belonged to us. Taking time to watch their behavior, and enjoying the sight of them alone, may be a small price to pay for a few damaged specimens in the garden.
