Tracking Patients is Easy When Using Dental Management Software
Mention the need for a dental appointment and many people will cringe. While it is well-know that dental service is required for oral health, it is still a visit that most people prefer not to make. From the business side, it is important to use dental management software as a method to keep track of clients.
Oral health plays an important part of overall health and fitness. It has been noted that people with bad oral hygiene often put off seeking treatment due to a fear of dentists. Fear of dentists is quite common around the globe. While the techniques of eras gone by may have been painful, the use of technology today doles out discomfort more than actual pain. The need to walk around in pain is also no longer necessary, especially since it is known that oral infections can spread throughout the body.
Once clients finally go to a dentist, it is important to have a method of keeping track of those patients. In the days before technology, manual records were kept on each and every person who entered the clinic. Every patient was assigned a medical record and all transactions, medical history, and services done on the client were kept within the file. It was then recorded on to a log sheet the balance, if any, and when the next appointment was to be scheduled.
When relying on humans to remember and keep up with patient needs, often patients who did not require additional services were forgotten. For example, if a client did not have any additional needs, they would be checked out and told they would be contacted for their next cleaning. A note would be placed in the patient record for a follow-up cleaning six months later. Frequently, they were forgotten.
Once offices realized they were losing patients due to records upkeep, a system was established that used manual index cards or recall cards. These cards were filed alphabetically by last name under the month that the patient was supposed to come back. Therefore, a person with a clean bill of health in June would have their card filed under the December tab so the employees would know to mail out a reminder.
While the card method helped with keeping track of patients, it was still a flawed system due to both employee management of details as well as patients changing their dates and times. Once early software came into play, the ability to have electronic records made it easier to track payments, treatments, and future needs.
Today, it is difficult to find a dentist who does not have some form of computer software for their business. What started out as an ineffective method of tracking has evolved into a precise system with a variety of details to help manage an office. First, one of the most important aspects of going electronic was the incorporation of scheduling. Software today is so detailed that appointments can be set for multiple doctors, hygienists, and x-ray techs all on the same calendar. This has allowed the offices to work smoothly and make the best use of their employees time.
Using a form of dental management software helps dentists track all aspects of their business today. By researching different related packages that are available, a dentist can make the best decision for his or her company.
