Rhinoplasty or nose jobs are one of the biggest craze in the world today. Why not? The nose is the center of the face, and how it looks can affect your overall look.

Aside from the downtime after the surgery, a lot of potential patients are afraid of the process itself. A great person once said we are only afraid of things that we don’t know about, and I guess knowing how a rhinoplasty is done will take that fear away.

Depending on the time of work, a nose surgery can take anywhere from an hour to two hours and a half. It can also be performed along with other cosmetic surgeries such as a liposuction or a face lift, and that would of course increase the total time needed. This kind of surgery can be performed in a surgical clinic, a hospital or a surgical suite in your surgeon’s office.

Once you are brought into the operating room, an intravenous or IV line will be inserted into your arm. Its main function is to administer medications and fluids into your system while the surgery is being done.

After the IV is inserted, you will be sedated and then an antibacterial solution will be used to wash your face. If it’s going to be an open surgery, an incision will be made on your columella or the skin connecting both of your nostrils. The incision is commonly in the shape of a shallow W or a Z. If it’s going to be a close operation, your doctor will be hiding the incision on your nose.

The technique used on the operation depends on what you want the nose job for. If it’s for the thinning of the tip of the nose, called a tiplasty, an incision will be made on the base of the columella. If it’s for narrowing the nostrils, your doctor will be making an incision on each side of the nose right in the crease where your nose meets your face.

After reshaping the nose, your doctor would then tape it and then apply a cast made from plastic, metal or plaster. This helps keep the nose in its new shape. The healing process takes about a week or two, so remember not to do any physical activities until your doctor says it’s okay to do so.

You will be then awaked after the surgery, and recovering from anesthesia will then follow soon after. Feeling emotional after getting out of the anesthesia is very normal, and some people even cry.
