Start A Lowering Cholesterol Diet
Have heart problems got you down? Are you concerned about your cholesterol levels? Help is here! If you\’ve survived a heart attack or are at high risk of having one, you should start a lowering cholesterol diet. By eating a low fat diet, you will, at the same time be changing your lifestyle for the better. Future heart attacks and other heart diseases can be minimized with this type of diet.
You should keep your saturated fat to 7% of daily caloric intake. Total fat should be kept to 25 – 35% and trans fat less than 1% of daily caloric intake. Daily sodium intake should be kept to less than 1500 milligrams per day. Be careful not to go overboard. You must maintain a healthy weight while controlling your blood cholesterol level. Be sure to consult your physician or dietitian as to what your appropriate caloric intake should be.
If your current diet has not provided for a low enough cholesterol number, ask your doctor or dietitian what level of soluble fiber is right for you. Or you may want to look into some low-cholesterol food products to start a healthy diet with.
Let\’s face it. You\’re not going to stay home with your controlled diet all of the time. So here are some good tips that will allow you to maintain your lowering cholesterol diet while you\’re away from home.
Do some research. See which restaurants publish their heart healthy menus online. At the restaurant, try asking for appetizer-size or side dish servings. You can always share your dish with your dining companion or ask for a doggie bag.
Be sure to order any butter, gravy, dressings or rich sauces on the side. It\’s easier to control your intake of cholesterol and saturated fats that way. For the extras like fries, chips or baked potatoes, you can ask to substitute salad or grilled vegetables in their place.
If you are going out for pizza, ask to cut the cheese by half and order the vegetable toppings such as green pepper, onions, tomato and mushrooms instead of pepperoni or sausage.
If you\’re out-and-about and fast food is all you can get, go for their salads or grilled skinless chicken sandwiches. Or you can go for the lower priced hamburgers or lean roast beef sandwiches. Stay away from fried or breaded meats or the bacon cheeseburgers.
The types of dishes that can be included in your lowering cholesterol diet are those that are broiled, steamed, garden fresh, baked, roasted, poached, dry boiled and lightly saturated.
Stay away from dishes that are creamed, au gratin, au fromage, escalloped, fried, crispy, stewed, basted, sauteed, marinated, and those with butter sauce parmesan, hollandaise, bearnaise, and casseroles and pastry crust.
All of the above will be high in saturated fat and cholesterol.
When you begin to loose weight, your calorie needs should be adjusted downward, thereby lowering your intake of fat and cholesterol even more. Remember to consult your physician or dietitian if you have questions before starting your lowering cholesterol diet.
