Treat Your Feet- Show Them You Care
It is amazing how we tend to take our feet for granted and never give them a second thought. That is until some small problem arises, maybe a twisted ankle or something as minor as a bruised toenail. Then we suddenly become aware of how much we depend on our feet and are so vulnerable if they are not “working” for us. A visit to a foot podiatrist for foot orthotics may even be a necessity.
There are some easy things to do to give your feet the treatment that they so rightly deserve and it won’t take much of your time or even cost more than a few dollars.
It may seem quite obvious but this one is worth pointing out:
Wear the Correct Fitting Shoes
We reach the point in early adulthood when our feet will not grow further and our shoe size is determined. However, as we grow older our feet will change as ligaments and tendons stretch and the foot actually becomes larger. It is wise to always have your foot measured correctly when buying new shoes. Ensure that your shoes are also wide enough and have enough room in the toe area to avoid getting bunions or hammer toes. It is also advisable to change shoes often and not wear the same pair for consecutive days.
Buy Over the Counter Aids
Many foot problems can be taken care of by buying treatments available at the pharmacy. If you have aching feet at the end of the day, it may be caused by “flat” feet. An arch support will work wonders and is an easy remedy. Of course, if the problem persists in the longer term it would be wise to make an appointment with a podiatrist to get to the root of the problem and have a custom made solution. Warts and corns can also be treated easily with any number of effective medications and have you “back on your feet” in no time.
Do Foot Exercises
Do not worry, these are easy and fun and can be done while you watch your favorite TV shows. While relaxing on the lounge you can begin by picking up small objects with your toes and moving them into little piles. Make circles using your ankles. Roll your feet on a tennis ball or water bottle. Do ankle pumps by simply moving your whole foot up and down on the spot. These simple things will exercise your toes, feet and ankles and strengthen and stretch them.
Remove Calluses and Dry Skin
Treat your feet to a good soaking in warm water. This will soften the skin and then you can use an emery board or pumice stone to remove the calluses and corns. When they are removed you can use a good cream or lotion to massage your feet. Dry and hard skin on the bottom of the feet will eventually turn to cracks which can then bleed or may lead to infection.
These are some very simple techniques that are easy to implement and will give your feet a little bit of special treatment that they truly deserve.
