Low Fat Alfredo Sauce
Alfredo sauce is a delicious addition to many pasta meals, and is famous for its amazingly creamy texture and taste. However, it\’s also famous for being quite fattening in most recipes. The main ingredients are butter, which is very fatty, Parmesan cheese, which is, again, quite fattening, and heavy cream. Heavy cream is… well… fattening also. So, as a whole, you can gain a whole big chunk of calories on any dish you add alfredo sauce to. Since being overweight is very much out of style these days, finding ways to cut down on the fat in your favorite foods is very desirable. So, how?
There are various substitutions you can make to sauce recipes to try and make them lower-fat, but you can lose all of what makes Alfredo so great if you\’re not careful. Here are some ways you can reduce the fat, calories, and cholesterol in your Alfredo sauce without compromising much quality.
The most fattening ingredient is probably butter. You can cut down on the butter content in most recipes somewhat, increasing cheese and cream content to match. Talking about cream, you can replace it with half-and-half to severely cut down on calories. The Parmesan cheese is a must, but you may be able to get a slightly-reduced fat option on that as well–ask around at your deli and compare packages for options. Once you have made your reduced-fat sauce, you can put it on all kinds of pasta, not just fettuccine. Macaroni, Penne, and spiral-shaped pastas are all candidates for this great sauce. You may want to avoid pasta shapes that have low surface area, though. Spaghetti, for example, has a hard time retaining the moderately thin sauce, and slurping it can leave quite a mess. You can use alfredo sauce in casseroles as well, though it will be quite fattening if you use a normal recipe, and you\’ll have to adjust for various factors. Alfredo sauce isn\’t just limited to the most popular fettuccine alfredo dishes: try various combinations and explore. Don\’t forget to have fun.
There are lots of different small additions that some people like to add to alfredo sauces. Lemon or lime juice can offer a zing to help perk up your sauce. Salt, and especially ground black pepper, add a bit of color and flavor. Some people like to use white ground pepper, to match the pale color of the sauce. There are lots of different small \”secret\” spices you can add.
