Waxing or Laser Hair Removal: Which is Right For Me?

Beauty is desirable but not always convenient. That’s especially true when it comes to the area of hair removal. Today, smooth skin, free of unwanted hair, is considered a hallmark of the beautiful person. It is, however, not that easy to obtain. Or retain. There are two primary hair-removal methods, though, that make hair removal possible: Waxing and laser hair removal. But which is more convenient? That depends on your needs. Do you want the cheaper, faster method or the most efficient and pain-free method?

Waxing
Waxing is an increasingly popular method of getting rid of undesirable body hair. It’s especially good for removing large patches at once. In this method, special wax is warmed and spread over the person’s skin. As the wax cools, the hair gets embedded in the wax. The person doing the hair removal then quickly pulls off the wax, opposite the direction of hair growth. This immediately results in smooth skin, as the hairs are pulled out of the follicles. The method is fast and not very expensive.

A special kind of waxing that is especially popular for home use is that of sugar waxing. Sugar waxing uses a dense, sugary substance that resembles caramel and which is spread over the body hair. A paper or cloth strip is then patted onto the mixture and then pulled off quickly, pulling out the hairs. The advantage of this method is that the caramel mixture is water-soluble and is therefore easier to clean up with plain water.

Laser Hair Removal
The use of lasers to remove unwanted hair is especially effective on those with light-colored hair. That’s because laser treatment actually affects the hair pigment, which sometimes looks strange on those with dark hair, but works well on blond, sandy or light red hair.

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive method. Whereas with waxing it’s difficult to target specific areas, a laser can treat skin in large areas without harming the surrounding layers of skin. The targeted hairs are permanently removed.

Although laser hair removal is more expensive than waxing, it’s also less painful. Usually, a laser treatment will result in little more than a slight stinging sensation for a few seconds. On the other hand, many people find waxing quite painful–but only for the second it takes to pull off the wax and hair.

One caveat regarding laser treatment: It only destroys hair during the anagen phase, that is, the active growth phase. This means the process must be repeated to keep hair from reappearing.

The types of lasers for hair removal come plenty. There is an Argon removal method but it has been discontinued, and Ruby laser which has also been discontinued since you have to have very fair skin for it to work without harm. Alexandrite is safe to use on pale skin, but it does not work on darker skin because the levels have to be increased which can do harm to the patient. Pulsed diode array is one of the best to use for pale to medium type skin due to its near infrared lasers. Nd-YAG laser is one of the best for darker skin types, but it has shown to be effective on all other skin types as well.

The decision of which method will be best for you is admittedly a confusing one. I have worked extensively with both. With a few questions, I can help you decide which one you should use. Feel free to e-mail me so I can help you make the right decision.
