Selecting the Perfect Stroller
Is there such thing as the perfect stroller? Yes—and no. There is a stroller out there that is perfect for your needs in most situations and is the best one for you to buy but there is no stroller that is perfect for every need in every situation. There will be situations where it will be to big or to small, to heavy or to light, wheels to big or to small and so on. You will not find a stroller that will meet every situation but you can find one that is best suited to your specific needs and doing that is very important simply because you need to get out and be able to transport your baby in comfort and safety with the conveniences you require. So what are some simple guidelines you should consider when selecting your perfect stroller. It is not that hard.
First, how much space do you have for transporting the stroller and how will it be used. If you will always be folding the stroller up and loading it in a car to use at some place beyond walking distance, going up and down stairs or in and out of public transportation you will want to consider a light weight and compact stroller. True, these strollers sacrifice some storage and comfort features, but not as much as you think. With lightweight frame and wheel designs many manufacturers like “Dream on Me” and “miaMODA” have achieved incredible portability with significant storage in a lightweight design. Many newer models now serve as complete travel systems with the stroller designed to double as a car seat. The seating section of the stroller will easily disconnect from the stroller frame and snap into a base that is left secured in your car. Although these systems may cost a little more, the time savings and comfort for your baby is usually worth the extra and because it doubles as a car seat, if you add in what you would have spent on the car seat alone, the added cost is minimal.
Secondly, are you a packer or do you prefer to travel light. If your main use for the stroller is simply to leave the house and take short walks around your neighborhood you will want a simple, lightweight stroller with wheels large enough to move easily over cracks in a sidewalk or up and down over a curb. A three wheeled or sometimes called “jogging or all terrain stroller” may be just the ticket for your needs. If on the other hand you want a stroller that serves as a nursery on wheels for all day outings for you and your baby you will want to consider storage for all the baby’s needs as well as good reclining and shade capability for naps while you remain active. You can even purchase a stroller that allows the handle to pivot allowing you to have your baby facing you while he is sleeping or facing forward so he can look around while awake.
Thirdly, you have to consider safety. Make sure the stroller is labeled stating it meets ASTM construction safety standards. Also realize, a safety harness is only good if it is used. Is the restraint easy to adust and fasten. Can you connect and release it easily as you move your child in and out of the stroller. Does the stroller provide proper foot and leg support to your baby while on the move or when reclining. You should also look at the braking system. Does it lock both back wheels, is the brake durable and easily engaged. Wheel size and number will also play into the safety of a stroller. Four small wheels, although light, are easily caught in cracks and are not as stable as 6, and 8 wheel models that keep the wheels in pairs. Larger wheels that are inflated provide more stability and a smoother ride for your baby.
Lastly, I know you have to consider cost, but I purposely put this as the final item. Most people have to live on a budget, (me too), but this is not the best item to skimp on. If you buy the right stroller, that fits your lifestyle and travel needs you will probably use it more than you realize. Going to the local dollar store and buying the cheapest thing on the shelf will probably only end in frustration for both you and your baby. You don’t have to buy a the best on the market but with a little shopping and consideration, you should be able to find a quality stroller that is right for your needs at a price you can live with.
With these few simple guidelines you should be well equipped to purchase your perfect stroller and enjoy the many outings you and your baby will share.
