What to Do When it Rains in Your Living Room
AHHHHH, Friday night and it is time to relax and kick up the heels. It is time to enjoy some time with the family playing games or watching TV in your favorite part of the house, the living room. Life in Bellevue could not be better than this. You hear the sound of distant thunder and hear the sound of rain on the roof, so relaxing. Then suddenly you realize that it is not just raining outside of the living room. It is raining inside! As you run for the buckets and umbrella you realize that you are in trouble. Your roofing is in need of a roof repair. You hit the trusty Internet or pick up the Yellow Pages only to find there are hundreds of people who specialize in roof repair work. How do you decide which one to call?
Roofs must withstand the rigors of the worst weather conditions. The weather can be challenging at times and you need a roofing contractor that you can trust. A bad contractor can be a nightmare almost as bad as the waterfall that is suddenly in your living room. The first consideration that most people think of is price. However, price does not say anything about the quality of the work. Prices for this type of work vary dramatically, even on the same project.
The differences can depend on the materials chosen and the amount of padding built into the bid so that they can remain profitable. Sometimes this padding includes contingencies so that they can still remain profitable if they have to come back to solve problems down the road. Roof repairs can be expensive, and it can be even more expensive if it has to be done two or even three times in the future. Price is not always the best indicator of quality.
The next thing that you must do in choosing a contractor is to ask them for references and credentials. Make certain that the contractor has a real business name and address. There are many private individuals that will put on roofing, but they are neither certified nor qualified to do an excellent job. Roofing contractor should be bonded and registered. Ask to see proof of insurance. Any reputable contractor will have liability insurance and workers’ compensation needs to be in place through the duration of your project. If it is not and a worker is injured on the job, then that injured worker can come after your insurance or your assets. Many homeowners do not realize this and they would not think about it when they are looking at all of the family piled on the couch to avoid the rising water in their living room.
Another consideration is to ask what their payment schedule is and if they offer any type of warranty on the labor that they provide. It is important to ask about the warranty on the materials that they use, but it is also important to inquire about any warranties that they may offer on their installation of those products. Do not forget to inquire about how many projects they have done that is similar, or how many years they have been in business. Taking a few simple precautions can help avoid many of problems with roof repair and roofing in the future and can lead to a more peaceful Friday night in Bellevue.
