About Desktop PCs
DeskTop PCs or a desktop personal computer is a computer which can be operated from a specific location. Before the advent of microprocessors, desktop personal computers where considered to be uniquely compact that can be located on a desk or a work station. The DeskTop PCs have graduated from large vertical format to small forms that can be placed behind a large LCD monitor. We get another format in which the LCD monitor is placed on top of the DeskTop Pc to save space. DeskTop PCS comprise of a Monitor, separate keyboard and the PC.
Earlier computer occupied huge space which fit a room. It was only in 1970’s that HP introduced their first desktop PCs which were programmable but filled the entire space of the desk. These desktop worked on ROM and had LED alphanumeric display. The desktop moved onto using cathode ray tube or CRT with cassette tape for storage. The desktop went into series of innovation and the IMB developed the Personal computers which had a separate monitor and which run on powerful operating systems like Macintosh or Mac and Windows.
These DeskTop PCs later developed as all in – one computer with Monitor inbuilt in to the CPU. Apple has to its credit the all in one original Macintosh of 1980’s and the latest version of iMac. All in one desktop PC are very convenient as they are portable and come with handles. All one needs to do is lift and plug into another location.
One drawback of these all in one desktop PCs is that they cannot be upgraded or customised as the motherboard is glued to the display unit due to lack of space. This constrains the user to upgrade the PC. But some version developed by Handii myFace are offering customised all in one desktop personal computers which enable one to pick of the shelf components that can be assembled to make a desktop. This provides them the freedom to configure, alter and upgrade their system periodically.
These desktop PCs are loaded with operating system that helps the computer to manage all the programs and software. Most PCs use Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Linux and Windows can be used in any computer but Mac OS is specifically designed for Apple computers and can be used only in these but there have been changes in their stance which makes Mac OS available for all PCs.
When one compares a Desktop PCs to a laptop the advantages of a desktop is that the accessories and spare parts are standardised which makes it cost effective. It provides freedom to customise, extend memory and various other extensions. Another advantage of DeskTop over a laptop is that they are in continuous source of power and do not depend on battery life. Though lap top is much more convenient as they occupy less space and are portable with wireless, Bluetooth and other functionalities.
