The Importance of Proper Cylinder Care
Compressed gas cylinders and cryogenic cylinders can be safety hazards, especially if they are not filled correctly. The canisters are manufactured based on safety standards that if not followed, can cause a great deal of problems. Even if they are filled to specifications, there are a number of important things you need to know about handling them. Any time the quality of a canister is compromised, whether it is during production or later during the handling and usage stage, it creates danger and puts people in harm’s way. If leakage occurs, there can be an explosion that could very well be fatal. This is why from the very beginning of the life of a canister, right through until its disposable, it must be cared for in the proper manner.
When filling the canister, it is important to focus on potential dangers. If any of the three components of fire are present, you are taking a major risk that could result in the loss of life. Too much oxygen in the canister puts it under pressure and creates a situation in which a flame could naturally be produced. The more oxygen there is, the better chance there is of an explosion. Remember, canisters that have been used and are empty are not free of oxygen. When filling the canister, you need to know if oxygen is present and once it is empty, it is also important to understand what is left inside.
Moving the canister also puts it at risk. Reliable canisters are capable of being moved without issue, but if you have purchased your canister from a company that has taken short cuts, you are increasing your risk during the transport of the canister. You are creating a serious situation putting at-risk canisters on a vehicle for moving. Not only are you dealing with the materials inside of the canister, you are dealing with the flammable materials in the vehicle. The combination of these things, if not handled correctly and safely, can be explosive. If one canister has a defect and bursts, you are looking at massive explosions down the line, right to the engine of the transport vehicle.
Storing canisters is another concern. When not in use, you will need a safe place to keep extra full canisters and empty, used canisters. The area needs to be free of flammable liquids and gases. Anything that is at risk of interfering with the canisters should be removed. If you are able to keep the canisters in a protective area, it is going to make things a lot safer for everyone in the area. If you spot leakage from a canister, remove it from the area using proper transport protocol.
Finally, remember how important pressurization is. If there is too much or too little pressure in the canister, you likely have a faulty canister. The nozzle will not work and it will do you no good. Worse, you might find yourself in danger because of the pressurization problems. If you remember how important safety is when dealing with canisters, you are likely to have no problems.
