Your Options When Shopping For Doors

Every homeowner would want to have an appealing door. For exterior and interior doors, you will surely have several options when it comes to materials, type and even in treatments or accents that you can use.

Options on Materials

Some of the most commonly used materials for doors are metals, woods, glass and fibreglass. The last two are normally used with metals and woods as frames. Each of these materials has their own pros and cons. Whether it is a good choice or not depends on what you want and need for your doors.

Metals are preferred because they are strong and durable. Aluminium and steel are the most commonly used metals for doors. They are cheap but durable and can last for years. Plus, they can be recycled. Metal doors are susceptible to dents but most manufacturers have found a solution. Metal doors are also a great insulator. Hot or cold air cannot easily pass through the metals so you can save up on energy costs. One main disadvantage of metal doors is that it is susceptible to rust. You will surely have problems if the finishing is done poorly or if you do not exert effort for maintenance.

Woods, on the other hand, will never give you problems with rust but it is prone to termites. They are not ideal for places where termites are predominant. Otherwise, you will need to spend most of the maintenance time checking for termites. Nonetheless, woods are durable and strong. Like metals, woods are good insulators but they are way heavier than steel or aluminium. There are plenty of woods to choose from including cherry, oak and mahogany.

Glass is also a good material for exterior or interior door. A door can be fully made from glass with a wooden or a metal frame while some people opt to get doors with only the upper half made from glass.

Fibreglass is another material that can be used for doors. They are cheaper and lighter but they are not as strong as most of the above-mentioned materials in terms of withstanding strong winds and weather. It is also not as good as metals and woods in terms of insulation but it is the best in withstanding salty ocean air so it is a great choice for coastal regions.

Options on Type

There are many types of exterior and interior doors based on their system. One is the hinged door. It is the traditional door where one side is attached to a side of wall using hinges. A variety of this is the French door, two doors that meet halfway with one of their sides hinged. You can also opt to have a sliding door or a folding door. You should consider the space inside and outside the room as well as the width of the doorway when choosing the type of door.

Options on Treatments and Accents

Treatments like blinds or drapes are normally used for clear or frosted glass doors. Their main purpose is to give the individuals enough privacy when they want. It can be easily swept out to access natural sunlight or a nice view outside.
