Having a Fire Safety Plan in Place for the Home

We all know businesses have to have a fire safety plan, but it can be a very good idea to have a plan for the home too. This can save lives as there are more fires at home than in businesses. It is also a good idea to make your children aware of what exactly they should do in case there ever is a fire.

The first thing one should do is to know their home, every room, this may sound strange but if you cannot draw each room and its exits on a piece of paper then you may not know your home as well as you think you did. To try this simple exercise could surprise many when you compare your drawing as you walk around the home.

Most of the key factors are fairly straight forward and logical. There are many precautions one can take that can really mean the difference between life and death, simple things like having an extinguisher in the kitchen, or better yet, a certified blanket. Also knowing what types of situation can be put out with what material can be extremely important.

Most fires in a residence start in the kitchen, this could be due to fat or oil getting too hot on the stove, this type of situation if it has not spread, should be covered with a damp towel or blanket to smother the flames. If there is an electrical type and it is possible, the main power supply should be turned off immediately. Water should not be used on these types of hazard because it can make the situation worse.

Always know your exits. Ideally, one should have at least two exits per room, of course this is not always possible but the whole family should know the quickest way out of the property from any room. Sometimes windows can be a good second exit. If caught early enough sometimes an alert individual that does not panic can sort the situation before it becomes a lost cause.

One should never attempt to take control of a situation if you need to take time to think about what to do, it should be second nature or it should be left alone and one should get themselves and their family outside and call 911. In most cases this is the safest thing to do, make sure everyone is safe and away from the property.

Another part of the planning that is important should be to make sure that everyone in the family, especially children, know that they should leave the property quickly. They should also know to meet up, if separated, in a designated place that you are all familiar with that is away from the residence.

Making a fire safety plan for your home is very important for the well being of you and your family. This will definitely save lives, and a family should practice a drill once each month to make sure everyone knows how to react and where to go.
