The first thing that you should check is the controller. In most cases, you have two separate controllers. One if probably in your car or truck and the other is mounted on the wall, usually near the door.

If one of the controls works and the other does not, you know that the issue is just with the one controller. The most likely scenario is that the controller that is in your car just needs new batteries. If the problem is with the controller that is mounted on the wall, the problem may be a blown circuit or just some loose wires. Another common reason it does not open when they are supposed to can be an obstruction of some kind. The entire length of the track must be free moving and clear of any kind of an obstruction. Sometimes, something in your garage can fall or just start leaning a little too much so that it gets in the path of the track. All you have to do is remove it and the garage door will start working again. A dent in the track can cause a problem as well. If the wheels do not move freely, it may prevent the door from opening. You may be able to fix the problem with a simple crowbar.

It is always a good idea to check a few basics before you call a professional repair shop. This is true even if you do not have any handyman experience. After all, you do not want to pay someone $100 to come out to your house only to tell you that you just need to get some new batteries, right?

However, make sure you do not repair anything that you are not comfortable with. There are some easy things you can identify and fix, but if you do not know the limitations of your abilities, you could also cause more damage. You also do not want to turn something that could be fixed in 30 minutes by a pro into something that will cost $300. If your garage door does not open, check the easy stuff, but then leave it to the pros.
