Got Mice? Fight Back With These Tips
Mouse and mice infestations do not go unobserved for very long, these hairy pests create quite a stir and can be easily seen running from the kitchen to their exit hole. Upon noticing such a problem, most people would not hesitate for long to call an exterminating service. But is there anything you can do on your own to prevent or fight the problem? While you wait for the exterminator or save up your dollars to make that call, there are a few affordable things you can do on your own to keep rodents away from your kitchen and pantry.
It may be difficult to understand how these mammals manage to sneak into your home, but you should know that they can slip through spaces as small as 3/8 of an inch in diameter. As impossible as that sounds, this information will help you understand how they get in and out of your home without your noticing. Though they are able to slip through the smallest of holes, those holes must be present for them to enter your home. Therefore, one of the first steps of ridding a home of a rodent problem is covering those holes.
The tricky part is likely to be locating these holes. If you have seen mice slipping away into the walls, you will know where to start, but you will have to go over the whole of the property to ensure that you cover every mouse entrance. To seal the smaller holes, caulk is a good option. Stuff larger openings with steel wool so that the mice cannot slip through, remember this is something they are especially good at; this substance is difficult for mice to destroy with their teeth. These critters are likely to do anything they can to avoid steel wool. It is ideal to find every entrance, or the problem may not ever go away. Check areas around doors, windows and the house foundation. Do not forget about garage doors and remember that mice can climb; a skill that will allow them to access holes in the home that may be found on the second or third floor.
Next, you will want to get rid of what is attracting these rodents into your home. They are likely looking for both food and a bit of warmth. Obviously, you do not want to crank up the AC and the electric bill just to keep out a few mice, but eliminating the mice’s access to food is not out of the question. Be careful to store all of your food especially dry food, such as rice and grains in sealed containers and to avoid leaving any scraps or crumbs where they can be found by mice.
Clean up carefully after each meal, and do not leave any pet food sitting around where rodents have easy access to it. And of course, make sure that they cannot get into your garbage can. Fit your kitchen garbage with an airtight lid so that any pests will have a difficult time getting in to devour the virtual mouse stockpile that is likely inside.
